Even though Steven Spielberg admitted long ago that an E.T. sequel would taint the original...

Steven Spielberg and Drew Barrymore are reported by Starpulse to be 'in talks' to revive the long-dead idea of a sequel to 1982 world-beating smash E.T.
Barrymore played E.T.'s reluctant chum Gertie in the original aged only six, winning plaudits in the role. The source story ran in the National Enquirer, so provenance is a tad wanting, but a 'source' told the paper:
"Steven and Drew are being very secretive about this baby. But they want to do this project and work together. Steven has an incredible story in mind for the sequel that will bring E.T. back to earth."
Spielberg and E.T. screenwriter Melissa Mathison worked up an earlier sequel treatment during the glory days of the film's first theatrical run: E.T. II: Nocturnal Fears was ultimately abandoned by Spielberg, as he felt that a sequel "would do nothing but rob the original of its virginity."
