Doctor Who: is Colin Salmon the next Doctor?
Simon Brew
Another face gets thrust forward as the future of the famous Time Lord...
Another day, and another actor gets linked with the role of Doctor Who. This time, it’s Colin Salmon, the star of many a Paul W S Anderson movie, and the man once tipped to be the first black James Bond, before Daniel Craig was cast as 007.
Salmon appeared in the last season of Doctor Who, playing Doctor Moon in the Steven Moffat two-parter Silence In The Library/Forest Of The Dead. And depending on who you believe, the 45-year old actor is now in talks with the BBC to take control of the Tardis from David Tennant. The announcement could well, apparently, be made as early as this Friday, on the BBC Children in Need telethon. Or it could all be nonsense. We suspect we’ll find out soon enough.
Salmon is a good actor, and we had the pleasure of nattering with him earlier in the year, but right now, we’re at the we’ll-believe-it-when-we-see-it stage where potential Time Lords are concerned.

Re: Doctor Who: is Colin Salmon the next Doctor? It's very odd, but without his glasses, I would never have recognised him as previously appearing in the series had it not been mentioned in the article!

Re: Doctor Who: is Colin Salmon the next Doctor?I am so very sorry but the Doctor should not be black, just as James Bond should not be black, or blonde (or Daniel Craig).
These characters are white & that is that, get over it you politically correct knobs.
By all means create a new series with a lead black actor & if it's any good I'll watch it but don't just turn the Doctor into a black man, plus imagine the hassles when the Dr goes back in time on earth, you couldn't get away with a black Dr taking charge of a situation, he'd be locked up & sold on as a slave pretty darn quickly.
Oi, BBC, Leave it!!! | |
Re: Doctor Who: is Colin Salmon the next Doctor?James Bond shouldn't be blonde? But isn't Daniel Craig regularly being touted as one of the best Bonds ever?
Plus, Martha didn't seem to have too much trouble back when she met Shakespeare, did she?
Jacob's LadderI think Colin Salmon is an excellent choice. He is a wonderful actor and in my opinion has a beautiful voice. I honestly don't understand why the doctor can't be black and if you are of this opinion it is considered 'politically correct'. Surely it would be wonderful to have someone who looked radically different from all the other Doctors - a COMPLETE regeneration in the true spirit of the process? Ultimately I just hope it will be a great actor no matter what Earth-based ethnic appearance he might have. However I think it would be truly wonderful for there to be a black hero for all children to watch on prime time family television for once.
As for Davros's worry about the Doctor being captured as a slave in a historical adventure, I actually think he's inadvertently come up with a brilliant story idea. I would LOVE to see that storyline and how the Doctor resolved it! A pure historical set in Africa and the Caribbean with no aliens in the pure historical tradition of the early Hartnells.

Re: Doctor Who: is Colin Salmon the next Doctor?I see the point Davros is trying to make, but I agree with valpy in the case of The Doctor. If a regenration can change hair color, and skin blemishes, I would think skin pigmentation would not be an issue. Just because standards in our society weren't as open minded when the show was created doesn't mean it can't move forward. But, I am more interested in the idea of Salmon himself. It's different than Colin Baker and Freema Agyeman. Dr. Moon was such a memorable character in a memorable story. and recent. Steven Moffat wrote the library story, and so It'd be cool to see if he uses that and say... makes a reference to The Doctor putting his likeness into the moon software, maybe even just to make River Song happy. Spoilers.
Re: Doctor Who: is Colin Salmon the next Doctor?Casting a black actor as James Bond would be stunt casting. Casting a black actor would be fair game. No one has ever bothered to set hard and fast rules about regeneration, so why the hell not?

Re: Doctor Who: is Colin Salmon the next Doctor?Ummmmm, I'm Complete Pyscho For Doctor Who ! Seen Every Single Episode That's Out There On Tape And Even Though I Don't Wear My Underpants On Outside Enough To Be Big Enough Geek To Read Novels Of Doctor Who Still I Remember Reading Somewhere That In One Of Those Novels It Explain Process Of Regeneration. That In Reality Timelords Are Share Bodies ! That The Body Doctor Is In Now Was Once Used By Somebody Else And That Whole Entire Story That Was Teelling You This Focus On The Seventh Doctor Finding Out What Tattoo On His Back Shoulder Meant !!! I Think It Mean Plot Device As It Would Explain What The Sixth Doctor Was Doing In A Fifth Doctor Story ( Arc Of Infinity ) And Would Also Explain To People Out There How We Can Have Black Doctor Is There Are Black People On Gallifrey ! We Saw One In A Flashback On The Last Of The Timelords ! So Colin Salmon As 11th Doctor ? Fuck !!! Go For It Guys :-)
Re: Doctor Who: is Colin Salmon the next Doctor?I've been hoping for a long time that Billy Connolly would be considered for the role, since funny Scotsmen seems to be a running tradition.
Re: Doctor Who: is Colin Salmon the next Doctor?Ok, I'm going out on a limb here. But, David T, said he was filming the four specials in Jan. An episode of Who takes about 3-4 weeks to film. So, he should be filming in Cardiff for about 3 months - He's said he's only filming in January. Is it possible that we will have a new Doctor on Christmas Day? Perhaps the specials are a red herring and DT's exit has been long planned. |
