GTA 5 isn’t just one of the best-selling games of all-time. GTA 5 isn’t just one of Rockstar’s greatest open-world games of all-time. GTA 5 is one of the most bountiful games ever made from a pure content perspective. Years after its release, the title’s ambitious online mode has offered thousands of hours of gameplay and helped GTA remain popular in an ever-changing video game landscape.
What about GTA 5‘s single-player mode, though? With Rockstar choosing to focus on the growth of GTA Online, GTA 5 single-player fans have been left dreaming of the days of GTA 4 when single-player DLC was alive and well. Without it, they’re left cruising the same streets, completing the same challenges, and studying the same mysteries.
That’s where these mods can help. From mods that let you play as the Incredible Hulk to some that add vital functions to the core games, these add-ons are essential for anyone who wants to greatly expand the lifespan of an already massive title without diving into the game’s online mode.
Just know that all of these mods are for the PC version of the game (which was recently made available for free via the Epic Games Store) and that installing them can sometimes be a tricky process. So far as that goes, we recommend checking out this extensive guide on installing and troubleshooting GTA 5 mods.
Home Invasion Mod
This relatively simple mod allows you to rob various homes across the GTA 5 map. It’s not much, but it’s one of those mods that adds a function to the game which not only feels appropriate for the spirit of the universe but adds something new and fun to do for those days where you’re just killing time. Just know that many homeowners will defend themselves if you are caught.
As you probably gathered from the name of this mod, it adds additional layers of deformation to the various cars in the games. In other words, they endure significantly more realistic damage. More importantly, though, this mod makes cars in the game much tougher than they previously were. Considering that one of GTA 5’s biggest shortcomings was how weak its cars were, we’d honestly recommend this mod solely for its secondary function.
Natural Vision Graphics
The mod that inspired this article is quite simply one of the best graphics mods on the market. Not only does it make GTA 5 look as good as modern games, but to be honest, we think this version of GTA 5 might look better than most of the best looking modern games. From the lighting to the subtle shifts in weather, Natural Vision Graphics offers a compelling vision of what GTA 6 might look like.
Vice City Remastered
Who doesn’t love Vice City? From it’s setting to its characters and that all-time great soundtrack, Vice City might just be the most complete GTA title from a thematic perspective. While this mod isn’t a total remake of GTA: Vice City via the GTA 5 engine, it will let you drive around the GTA: Vice City map while enjoying GTA 5’s visuals and gameplay enhancements. At the very least it will tide you over until Rockstar finally gets around to that official GTA: Vice City remake we’ve patiently been waiting for.
Open All Interiors
This stunningly ambitious mod aims to address one of GTA 5’s more noticeable design shortcomings by allowing you to actually enter and explore several of the game’s buildings. While it doesn’t quite let you enter every building in the game, it does help expand the game’s world in significant and organic ways. Again, this could be a preview of how next-gen technology will ultimately benefit the design of GTA 6.
Are we tired of zombies? A little bit, but the real question is “Are you tired of zombies?” If not, then you’ll likely love this awesome mod which adds hordes of the undead to Los Santos. While adding zombies to the world of GTA 5 would usually be reason enough to recommend a mod, the fact that this add-on features survival elements (including the ability to start and manage a camp) really sets it apart.
It’s true that all this mod does nothing more than let you listen to the game’s radio stations while you’re on foot, but that’s really more than enough. To be honest with you, we have no idea why this hasn’t been a feature in the GTA series for years now. If you’re only interested in downloading quality of life GTA 5 mods that won’t break the original experience, Mobile Radio should absolutely be somewhere near the top of your list.
Gang and Turf
Remember how GTA: San Andreas let you participate in gang wars for control of various territories? While the GTA series never really officially revisited that idea, this mod adds an expanded approximation of the concept that opens up entirely new gameplay possibilities. It’s satisfying to be able to create your own gang and battle for control of Los Santos. Again, this is another of those concepts that we’d love to see Rockstar revisit in an official capacity.
We theorized that London may very well be the setting of GTA 6, but why wait to see if that proves to be the case? While this mod doesn’t offer a 1:1 recreation of London by any means, it does add some London trademarks to the world of GTA 6. It’s a labor of love that offers a little cultural flavor to a series that has been rooted in Americana for quite some time now.
The Incredible Hulk Mod
Various GTA 5 mods let you play as everyone from Thanos to Goku, but this is one of the most complete character conversion mods on the market. It’s been too long since we’ve gotten a proper Incredible Hulk open-world video game, and this mod showcases why it’s so much fun to walk around an open area and do a little hulk smashing. Actually, this is one of the rare character conversion mods that doesn’t often completely break the game.
The Army Spawns at Five Stars
Did you always think it was strange that the army doesn’t show up when you hit the max wanted level in GTA 5? After all, that’s what happened in pretty much every other GTA game. This mod corrects that oversight by sending in the military cavalry whenever your lawless rampages reach their apex. Just be prepared to run for your life as tanks and military fighter jets hunt you down. Think of this mod as a piece of some kind of GTA 5 hard mode that you could conceivably create.
ATM Robberies & Bank Heists
Are home invasions not your style? Do you miss the heists of GTA 5’s single-player mode? Well, this mod ups the ante a bit by allowing you to rob ATMs and even banks. While the bank robberies in this customized mode are hardly complicated, they’re a great way to earn some cash, participate in a little role-playing, and even instantly earn a max wanted level.
We love Half-Life 2’s gravity gun, and we’d be lying if we told you that we weren’t always a little curious to see how it would perform in other games. This GTA 5 mod answers that question quite nicely by granting you access to an especially powerful version of the gravity gun which is capable of pulling vehicles and other objects towards you before you launch them across the world. It’s a lot of fun.
While many of the most popular GTA 5 mods add vehicles to the game, the “Funny Vehicle” pack is a particularly notable highlight. It adds several pop culture vehicles to the game, so if you’ve ever wanted to cause mayhem while driving around in The Flintstones‘ foot-propelled car or the Batmobile, this pack might just have what you’re looking for.
You’ve got to love a good idea that’s well-executed, and that’s pretty much what you get here. As it turns out, the promise of playing GTA 5 with a variety of psychic powers is just as fun as you would imagine it would be. You can even think of this as the best “Force Powers” mod for GTA 5. However you choose to view it, you have to experience the chaos it encourages.
We don’t know if we want the GTA series to go full RPG in the near future, but this mod offers a glimpse at the exciting potential of this concept. From skill trees to expanded character storylines, this mod showcases how well the GTA 5 framework lends itself to a more traditional role-playing experience. The mod itself is a work in progress, but it’s impressive and fun even in its somewhat rough state.
If you’re looking for mods that let you just get weird with it, then we’ve got to recommend the Vehicle Cannon add-on. Simply put, this mod lets you shoot cars out of your guns. While it’s true that this is the kind of mod that can easily crash your PC, it’s also the kind of mod that lets you generate hilarious amounts of chaos at will.
Single Player Apartments
Ever since GTA: Vice City, we’ve loved the idea of being able to buy real estate in a GTA game. It’s just a great way to incentivize you to earn money in a series that often offers little to do with your mountains of cash. This mod revitalizes that concept by adding several homes to the single-player game for you to purchase. It’s not nearly as involved as the mission-based real estate system we saw in Vice City, but it’s a great feature.
This mod allows you to witness what might happen if a devastating tsunami hit Los Santos. That might not sound that interesting, but once you see the world of GTA 5 almost completely underwater, we can guarantee that you’ll be eager to explore the scope of this stunning conversion. Just be warned that this is another one of those mods that can cause some technical difficulties.
