Riverdale’s KJ Apa to Lead Romantic Comedy The Last Summer

The film follows a group of teens during the summer between high school and college.

KJ Apa is going to take a break from the high-stakes drama of Riverdale to star in romantic comedy The Last Summer. According to Deadline, Apa will lead the ensemble cast of the film, which starts principal photography on April 23. (But how will Archie find the time to spend the summer working on his music?!)

The film, directed by Bill Bindley, follows a group of high school graduates whose lives intersect over the summer between high school and college in Chicago. This isn’t a period of time that gets explored very often in film or TV. You get a lot of high school films and a fair amount of college films, but not as many films set during that emotionally-confusing transitionary period.

Blindley wrote the script for The Last Summer alongside Scott Bindley and April Prosser. In addition to his starring role on Riverdale Apa has co-starred in A Dog’s Purposeand Altar Rock. A New Zealand actor, the 20-year-old is pretty new to the Hollywood game, with Riverdale being his first major role… which is pretty impressive.

More news as we hear it.
