Fate of the Furious Breaks Global Box Office Records

The Fast and the Furious franchise can now claim it is bigger than Star Wars.

If you had any doubt that there will be a ninth installment in the Fast and the Furious franchise, this should wipe that away once and for all. The eighth (!) movie in the series just opened to the kind of spectacular numbers that should keep this thing going for another decade or so.

Fate of the Furious opened with just over $100 million at the US box office over the Easter weekend, which is impressive enough. But its the global opening that really just secured the future of the franchise. Opening in over 60 countries, Fate of the Furious took in an additional $432 million overseas, for a whopping $532.5 million opening weekend.

For comparison, The Force Awakens previously had the biggest opening weekend with a combined $529 million. Did you ever think you’d see the day when this franchise would be able to claim it’s bigger than Star Wars? Box Office Mojo has a nice breakdown of the massive opening weekend if you’d like more details. Otherwise, pencil in Fast 9 for 2019 or so.
