James Nesbitt rules out Doctor Who

Simon Brew

If you're trying to work out who will replace David Tennant as Doctor Who, it's time to cross James Nesbitt off the list...

Published on Mar 14, 2008

The race to replace David Tennant in the Tardis – even though David Tennant hasn’t said that he’s quitting yet – has one less runner in it now, courtesy of the latest from actor James Nesbitt.

Nesbitt had been linked with the role of Doctor Who, partly off the back of his starring role in Jekyll (which Who scribe Steven Moffat also wrote for), but has kept his distance from any speculation. Now he’s come firmly off the fence, by declaring that he doesn’t want the role, and doesn’t want to be the one to follow David Tennant. Trying to follow someone as successful as the current incumbent of the Tardis would be “career suicide”, he’s quoted as saying.

He also went on to say that Doctor Who wasn’t a show he was raised with, and that while his kids are fans of it, it was never really his thing.

The spotlight falls back to Robert Carlyle, it seems….

Stephen Fry...please...it's time for a genuinely funny Doctor. Carlyle's played one too many nutters.

Robert Carlyle's a superb actor - but Doctor Who? Not if they want to continue showing it before the watershed.
