Sony has confirmed that it will host a PlayStation 5 live stream conference in June. There’s no word on what, exactly, we can expect from this event at this time.
The PlayStation Twitter account only refers to it as a “look at the future of gaming.” Sony has also noted on the PlayStation blog that this virtual event will primarily focus on PS5 launch games, which is quite exciting considering that we haven’t heard about many confirmed launch titles as of yet.
This would suggest that this event will not serve as a full “reveal” of the PlayStation 5 console itself. That is to say, it’s possible that we won’t get a look at the PS5’s design, price, and release date quite yet.
However, there are a couple of recent developments that could mean that this will be a significant PS5 stream. The first is a report that Sony kept the date secret from just about everyone (including some partners who may be showcasing games during the show), due to its worries that stream information would be leaked ahead of time. That would suggest that this could actually be much more than just a brief look at a few PS5 games.
There’s also the matter of the timing. With E3 2020 now canceled (not that Sony was planning on attending that event anyway) and Microsoft reportedly ready for an Xbox Series X stream in July, the timing makes sense for Sony to showcase the PS5 now. Besides, the next couple of weeks are clearly becoming an E3 replacement for many studios, so the stars do seem to be aligning for an impactful virtual event.
Given what we’ve heard thus far, though, we’d say you should manage your expectations a bit and simply anticipate the reveal of some upcoming PS5 games. Anything else we get from this event will be a bonus. In any case, it’s become clear that Sony and Microsoft are entering the home stretch of their next-gen reveal campaigns.
