Despite the fact that Grand Theft Auto V was first released in 2013 on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, the game seems to have a lot of life left in it. Rockstar Games has announced the hit open-world game is coming to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X in the second half of 2021.

The most exciting news: a new standalone version of GTA Online will be available for free exclusively for PlayStation 5 players during the first three months. While the campaign is absolutely excellent, GTA V‘s big draw these days is undoubtedly GTA Online, the multiplayer mode that launched the title to unimaginable success. With billions of dollars in revenue and millions of copies sold, some market analysts even claim that GTA V is now the most successful entertainment product ever released.

“I think it’s a wild outlier,” analyst Doug Creutz told MarketWatch in 2018. “That’s not to say Rockstar won’t have other big hits—it may—but another GTA 5 isn’t likely. Michael Jackson had a lot of hit albums but he only had one Thriller.”

Well, Rockstar may feel the same way since it continues to re-release the game on every new platform that’s released. GTA Online is still incredibly popular, with a large fanbase that logs on to complete weekly challenges and missions, so it’s not surprising that Rockstar wants to keep that momentum going.

“The new generation versions of GTA V will feature a range of technical improvements, visual upgrades and performance enhancements to take full advantage of the latest hardware, making the game more beautiful and more responsive than ever,” Rockstar said in a press release.

Rockstar has promised “more new updates including additional GTA Online content exclusive to the new consoles and PC…Additionally, all PlayStation Plus members on PlayStation 4 will get GTA$1,000,000 (deposited into their in-game Maze Bank account within 72 hours of log-in) each month they play GTA Online until the launch of GTA Online on PlayStation 5.”
