Today is September 8, the 54th anniversary of the premiere of Star Trek: The Original Series on NBC-TV back in 1966. To celebrate that milestone, CBS All Access has launched Star Trek Day, featuring marathons of episodes from all the Trek shows as well as online panels featuring cast and crew members from all nine shows in the Trek universe.

With Star Trek: Discovery being the franchise’s current flagship series, it only makes sense that today would also feature the launch of another full trailer for the show’s third season. And here it is!

The trailer was introduced by series star Sonequa Martin-Green (Commander Michael Burnham) and as the synopsis for the season explains, “After following Commander Burnham into the wormhole in the second season finale, Star Trek: Discovery season 3 finds the crew of the U.S.S. Discovery landing in an unknown future far from the home they once knew. Now living in a time filled with uncertainty, the U.S.S. Discovery crew, along with the help of some new friends, must work together to restore hope to the Federation.”

As the trailer indicates, this is an entirely new and unknown setting for the series as the Discovery ventures more than 900 years into the future, only to learn that the Federation has mostly collapsed after an event called the Burn. “What is the Burn?” Burnham asks future denizen and new cast member Cleveland “Book” Booker (David Ajala from Supergirl). He replies ominously, “The Burn is the day the galaxy took a hard left.”

While the trailer doesn’t quite indicate what the Burn was or get into much detail about its effects on the galaxy or the Federation, it’s clear that Burnham and her crew have a clear mission to restore order and, hopefully, bring the Federation back to its former glory.

In a short panel discussion following the premiere of the trailer, co-showrunner Michelle Paradise explained that the fate of the Federation is a “mystery” that Burnham and crew will have to solve, adding, “We’ll find it’s still in existence but much diminished from what it was. They’re very much in survival mode.”
