Insomniac Games has confirmed via Twitter that the female Lombax who stole the show in the Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart trailer will be a playable character.

Granted, the above tweet is a bit light on details, but this is the first time that we’ve received confirmation that the female Lombax is more than just a side character whose appearance in this sequel is merely a nod to its multiverse shenanigans.

Of course, there’s still quite a bit about this character that we don’t know. Actually, we still don’t even know what her name is. The entire world is still referring to her as “female Lombax” or, in some cases, “Ratchette.”

That last name is actually somewhat interesting as Clank refers to this character as “Ratchet” before she indicates that she doesn’t know that name. That would seem to rule out the possibility that she’s just a variation of Ratchet from another universe, but then again, it’s possible that’s exactly what she is but that she goes by a completely different name and doesn’t know that there is a multiverse variant of her.

Her status as a playable character would certainly strongly suggest that she has a major role to play in the upcoming adventure. If pressed to guess, we’d say that Ratchet and Clank’s universe hopping leads them to wherever this character happens to live. Whatever is causing this multiverse calamity has likely affected her world which inspires her to join the duo on what would seem to be their most ambitious adventure yet.

While many questions remain regarding the identity of this female Lombax, we do know that Rift Apart will take full advantage of the PS5’s SSD power. Insomniac has already stated that they intend to offer some of the universe hopping that we saw in the game’s debut trailer in real-time. That would prove to be quite the technical feat if it’s true, but based on what we’ve heard regarding the PS5’s potential, we’re not going to doubt that Insomniac will find a way to make it happen.

Between that information and the promise of a new playable protagonist, Rift Apart is shaping up to be one of the most promising early PS5 titles. While Rift Apart will likely prove to be a PS5 launch game, the fact that Sony hasn’t confirmed a launch date for the console as of yet means that next-gen release dates everywhere are up in the air at the moment.
