Chevy Chase has left Community

After making it through almost four seasons of Community, Chevy Chase is finally parting ways with the show...

As George Harrison and the Bible tells us, all things must pass. After three-and-a-half tempestuous years on NBC's Community, which saw him having a series of run-ins with former showrunner Dan Harmon and becoming increasingly dissatisfied with his role, Chevy Chase has left the building.

The news won't come as a surprise to anyone who's followed the ongoing tussles between Chase and the makers of Community. The actor reportedly felt that his character had run its course, and told The Huffington Post this autumn that the whole venture was, "“...a big mistake", "the hours are hideous", and "I just sort of hung around because I have three daughters and a wife, and I figured out I might as well make some bread every week, so I can take care of them in the way they want".

Judging by that same interview, in which Chase described TV sitcoms as "probably the lowest form of television" (way to make friends and influence people Chevy), we're unlikely to see the National Lampoons actor in another small screen comedy role.

The likelihood is that Chevy Chase's absence won't be felt too strongly from season four, not because his character, curmudgeon millionaire Pierce Hawthorne, wasn't an integral part of Community, but because his departure comes when all but two episodes of the series are already in the can. Effective immediately, Chase's exit from Community won't affect the season four finale, which has already been filmed.

Season four of Community is due to air on NBC on Thursday the 7th of February, 2013.
