Squid Game Creator Confirms Season 2, Talks Potential Release Date
Squid Game Season 2 is officially a go, but we probably won't be seeing it anytime soon.
Hwang Dong-hyuk likely never imagined the massive scope of Squid Game‘s success. The creator of the Netflix global phenomenon is well-known feature film director in Korea who initially developed Squid Game as a movie. It only became a nine-part series after years of rejections; 13 years after the creator first had the idea for the story, the media landscape had changed enough that Hwang’s vision fit into a modern streaming TV drama format. That being said, Hwang didn’t necessarily imagine it as a multi-part drama, but, as we all know from watching Squid Game, money talks… and the talented creator is ready to extend Gi-hun’s story part a single season. (And hopefully will get paid better for it this time.)
Squid Game Season 2 is confirmed: “So, there’s been so much pressure, so much demand, and so much love for a second season. So I almost feel like you leave us no choice,” Hwang told AP News at a red carpet event in LA. “But, I will say there will indeed be a second season.”
Squid Game Season 2 Potential Release Date
Of course, official confirmation doesn’t mean it’s right around the corner. While it hopefully won’t take another 13 years, the second season needs to be written, shot, and edited before we get to see it. Hwang addressed the question of a potential release date for the second season with pragmatism: “It’s in my head right now. I’m in the planning process currently. But I do think it’s too early to say when and how that’s going to happen.” It’s gonna be awhile, folks. These things take time.
Squid Game Season 2 Story
What might Season 2 be about? Previously, Hwang had mentioned a potential second season could follow the story of Inho’s Front Man, but in the short AP News interview, the Korean director’s short tease focused on the Season 1 protagonist: “Gi-hun will come back. He’ll do something for the world,” Hwang said in English.
When we last we saw Gi-hun, he had a full head of bright red hair and had just decided to forgo seeing his daughter in L.A., seemingly in favor of making it his mission to take down Squid Game. “Listen carefully,” Gi-hun angrily tells the Squid Game operator over the phone. “I’m not a horse. I’m a person. That’s why I want to know who you people are, and how you can do these horrible things to people… it wasn’t a dream. I can’t forgive you for everything you’re doing.” Then, he walks away from the plane and hopefully towards Gong Yoo.
Previously, Hwang told The Guardian about a potential Season 2: “Of course there is talk. That’s inevitable because it’s been such a success. I am considering it. I have a very high-level picture in my mind, but I’m not going to work on it straight away. There’s a film I really want to make. I’m thinking about which to do first. I’m going to talk to Netflix.”
