The Batman Movie Logo Revealed Ahead of DC FanDome

Matt Reeves has unveiled The Batman logo and a new poster illustrated by Jim Lee himself! It's our best look at the new Batsuit yet.

The Batman returns in 2021, but before director Matt Reeves’ new take on the Dark Knight hits theaters, we’re getting a first look at the movie at this weekend’s DC FanDome digital event. What should you expect to see during The Batman segment of the show? At the very least some early footage from the film, part of which had already been shot before production was shut down at the height of the coronavirus pandemic. The official panel description promises “a surprise (or two) for the fans!”

But according to Reeves, the surprises start now. Ahead of DC FanDome, the director has unveiled the movie’s logo, which, while simple and to the point, is unlike the Batman movie logos of the past. Give it a look:

Of note is the new Bat symbol, which was first revealed in Feb. 2020, along with star Robert Pattinson’s Batsuit. The symbol is a bit thinner and sharp-edged than the DCEU’s chunkier, The Dark Knight Returns-inspired logo. The new one actually resembles the one used by DC Comics for its main Batman series.

It’s also hard to miss the red motif, a color that’s been a part of The Batman marketing since the aforementioned Batsuit reveal. Is this a clue about something in the movie? Or does Pattinson’s Batman standing under a red glow just look cool? Maybe we’ll find out by watching whatever Reeves is bringing to DC FanDome!

Along with the logo, Reeves also revealed a new teaser image showcasing the new Batsuit as illustrated by DC Comics publisher Jim Lee. It’s really cool:

The movie is set in the early days of the Dark Knight’s crime-fighting crusade, but don’t expect Dr. Death, the Mad Monk, or Hugo Strange to be the major villains of this piece. The movie will feature some of Batman’s most popular rogues. The Batman also stars Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, Paul Dano as the Riddler, Colin Farrell as the Penguin, John Turturro as crime boss Carmine Falcone, and Peter Sarsgaard is rumored to play Two-Face. Rounding out the good guys are Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Gordon and Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth.

While an ensemble cast like this is a recipe for a big, explosive movie — and it likely will be — Reeves has also teased that the film will be a personal story about the Bat himself.

“It’s very much a point of view-driven, noir Batman tale,” Reeves told THR in 2019. “It’s told very squarely on his shoulders, and I hope it’s going to be a story that will be thrilling but also emotional.”

If all goes well, this movie is said to be the start of a new trilogy starring Pattinson’s Caped Crusader.

The Batman opens in theaters on Oct. 1, 2021.
