WWE Changes the Name of the Fabulous Moolah Battle Royal Amid Controversy
After well-deserved public backlash, it's now the WrestleMania Women's Battle Royal
WWE announced on Monday Night Rawearlier this week that the inaugural “Fabulous Moolah Battle Royal” would take place at WrestleMania 34for members of the women’s roster.
There was just one problem … Fabulous Moolah was a pretty awful woman.
She had a reputation for beating and breaking her students when she was a trainer. It was almost like a cult, with women later saying that they had to move into Moolah’s house and she took most of their money when it came to wrestling bookings.
Oh, and she also was accused by several women of pimping them out to males in the business, whether it was wrestlers or bookers.
“After further consideration, we believe it’s best to proceed with the name ‘WrestleMania Women’s Battle Royal,’” WWE told The Wrap as it broke the news of the name change on Thursday. “What remains most important is that this historic match is part of WWE’s unwavering commitment to the Women’s Division.”
A petition circulated online to urge WWE to change the name, and it had accumulated 10,000 signatures on Wednesday (just two days after Raw aired).
You would think that someone at WWE would have said to Vince McMahon, “Hey Vince, maybe this isn’t the smartest idea in the world?” Who knows, maybe someone did? It’s not like Vince is apt to listen to people (see Roman Reigns’ push).
As of this writing, a YouTube video on WWE’s channel is still up anouncing the battle royal, but comments were disabled. I wonder why?
WrestleMania 34 will take place on April 8. We have more details on it here.
