G.I. Joe and Wolverine sequels move ahead

Simon Brew

Neither will be making the critics’ top ten lists for the year, yet both G.I. Joe and Wolverine are heading back to cinema screens in the years ahead…

They were two of, perhaps, the lesser regarded films of the summer, and yet both Paramount and Fox are satisfied enough with the money brought in by G.I. Joe and Wolverine respectively, that sequels to both projects are underway.

G.I. Joe has already raked in over $100m worldwide, in spite of Paramount's reluctance to screen the film for critics. And as such, with a global take of around $250m now firmly within the film's grasp, it's going to be a profitable venture by the time the DVD sales are factored in (it's turned out to be quite a summer for Paramount).

Furthermore, the entire cast of the film are contractually locked in to return to their roles, and Paramount has now confirmed that it's going to look to get cracking on G.I. Joe 2 sooner rather than later. Talking to the Los Angeles Times, Paramount's Rob Moore has confirmed the project. It's also said that director Stephen Sommers, who didn't have the best of times on the film, will not be in the director's chair this time round. Sommers was rumoured to have been given the boot from the film during post-production.

Meanwhile, Hugh Jackman, talking to MTV, has confirmed that work has begun on a second Wolverine movie, and as rumoured earlier in the summer, this time the action is going to shift to Japan. The film is going to be tied closely to the comic book story arc by Frank Miller and Chris Claremont, where Wolverine heads to Japan to learn new skills and a new philosophy. Jackman told MTV, "I think the fans love that saga. It's my favourite saga of the Wolverine stories. That's a movie I've longed to make from the beginning, so that's where we're heading."

The first Wolverine movie, incidentally, picked up a Teen Choice Award from MTV at the weekend in the action/adventure film category. We think it was voted for by teenagers in a bad mood.

I just watched Wolverine the first time a few nights ago...what a disappointment :( I love the X-men comics, loved the cartoon show as a kid and I even loved the Three x-men movies. I thought Hugh Jackman done the movie representation of Wolverine perfectly so with that thought I assumed that wolverine would be an amazing film. I didn't think it would be getting any Oscar nominations but it would at least make for some good watching. I'm not clued up on the movie making process and I don't know who has what amount of input into the direction the film takes but wtf? the movie was terrible. It's not as if they had to create an original story...decades of Wolverine material to choose from and they still messed it up. I'm probably not going to bother watching G.I joe.

It's simple. Lots of people went to watch it, so it made a good return. A good number of those people might have been dissapointed... but that's another thing.... Of course, whether or not the sequels do as well is a whole other matter.

Critics are no gatekeepers who can prevent fans from getting their fix: "Opinions are like a*holes, everybody's got one." In Hollywood it's a matter of calculating risks: If a movie makes a profit, there is a certain fanbase for follow-ups. Clever marketing creates a hype for eager fans, who start hoping for a masterpiece while posting comments on a forum. The studios are laughing all the way to the bank!! :-)
