Texas Chainsaw Massacre Reboot in the Works

Ryan and Andy Tohill set to breathe new life into an old leatherface as Texas Chainsaw Massacre begins again.

Sally and Franklin Hardesty are picking up one last goddamn hitchhiker. Legendary Entertainment has their hand on the starter rope of another The Texas Chainsaw Massacre reboot, according to Variety.

With a screenplay by Chris Thomas Devlin, the film will be directed by Ryan and Andy Tohill, who made their feature-directing debut with The Dig (2018). That movie was about a convicted killer with amnesia who gets out of jail to dig up a body he can’t remember. Much like the last film made from Tobe Hooper‘s 1974 classic: the 2017 film Leatherface directed by Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo.

“The Tohill’s vision is exactly what the fans want,” producer Fede Alvarez (Don’t Breathe, 2013’s Evil Dead) said in a statement. “It’s violent, exciting and so depraved that it will stay with you forever.”

The original The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, written by Hooper and Kim Henkel, billed itself as being based on a true story. The opening narration says the “the tragedy which befell a group of five youths”  led to the discovery “of one of the most bizarre crimes in the annals of American history.” Hooper actually based the film very loosely on the killings of Ed Gein, which also inspired the horror films Psycho (1960) and The Silence of the Lambs (1991). The low budget film was shot in almost a documentary style. The actors playing in the film, Marilyn Burns, Paul A. Partain, Edwin Neal, Jim Siedow and Gunnar Hansen, looked completely real.

Hooper directed the 1986 sequel The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2. He dropped the documentary feel and explored the darkly comic possibilities. It changed families with 1990’s Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3. It was rebooted again in 1994, with Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation. Platinum Dunes and New Line Cinema produced a remake with The Texas Chainsaw Massacre in 2003. It spawned prequel The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning in 2006.

Texas Chainsaw 3D (2013) was a direct sequel to the original 1974 film, and cut off all ties with the films in between. The prequel Leatherface came out in 2017.
