If you’re looking to do any kind of box office prediction for 2018, it’d be wise not to leave the sequel to Mamma Mia! out. The first film made an awful lot of cash back in 2008, and shifted an abnormal amount of DVDs. That it’s taken 10 years to happen is perhaps the only surprise about a sequel coming together.
Filming has now finished on Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, which brings back Amanda Seyfried, Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Lily James, Stellan Skarsgard, Dominic Cooper and more. New to the cast are Lily James, Jeremy Irvine and Cher. It’s due out July 20, 2018, and the first trailer is now online:
According to the official synopsis, the story will go back and forth in time, with James playing the younger version of Streep’s character, while Irvine, Josh Dylan and Hugh Skinner play the junior editions of Brosnan, Skarsgard and Firth. In other words, half the movie is an origin story, folks.
Here’s the poster for the film…
