Avatar 2, 3, 4, and 5 Release Dates Officially Confirmed

We're getting four more Avatar movies over the course of the next 8 years. They really mean it this time.

Well, they’ve been promising us this for a really, really long time, but it seems like James Cameron and crew are serious about it now. Avatar 2 is now officially in production, and they’re also getting right to work on three additional sequels. In other words, there are now four Avatar movies in the pipeline, and they’ve even given us release dates.

Here’s what we’ve got:

Avatar 2 – December 18, 2020

Avatar 3 – December 17, 2021

Avatar 4 – December 20, 2024

Avatar 5 – December 19, 2025

So it will take over a decade from the release of the first Avatar film (which was released in 2009 and took in $2.7 billion globally) to get us that initial sequel. Why is there a three year gap between Avatar 3 and Avatar 4? That’s anybody’s guess. Maybe James Cameron is hoping these will be fully immersive VR experiences by then or something.

Here’s the official announcement, just in case you don’t believe us.

Great to be working with the best team in the business! Avatar takes flight as we begin concurrent production on four…
