Legendary items have been part of the World of Warcraft experience since the MMO’s vanilla days, but Shadowlands will drastically change how you acquire some of the most desirable gear in the game.

Shadowlands introduces a crafted legendries system that allows players to forge legendary items. While that means that you will no longer be entirely reliant on luck to get the legendary item you want most, actually crafting a legendary item will demand a lot of work, a lot of time, and…well…a little luck.

Here’s what you need to know about how to craft legendaries in Shadowlands.

What Do I Need To Craft Legendary Items in Shadowlands?

Crafting a legendary in Shadowlands will require you to collect four main components

  2. 2 Missives
  3. Soul Ash
  4. Memory of the Runecarver Legendary Recipes

Where Do I Find Base Items and Missives For Crafted Legendaries?

Base Items are basically just frames for your crafted legendaries. They can be created by high-level Tailors, Jewelcrafters, Blacksmiths, and Leatherworkers, but players with those professions will need to acquire Base Item recipes from endgame content before they’re able to craft them.

Since Base Items are tradeable, that means you should be able to request one from a friend who has the right profession and recipe. You can also just buy one from the auction house, but they’re going to be expensive. As for Missives, those can be created by high-level scribes.

As you can see, the process of creating a legendary requires a lot of cooperation between different professions, which should help “balance” how useful each profession is. At the same time, that system also means that you’re probably going to have to work with others to craft the item you want. That, or you’re going to have to spend a ton of gold at the auction house for materials.

Where Do I Find Soul Ash?

Soul Ash can only be acquired from Torghast: WoW‘s new roguelike dungeon. Here’s how much Soul Ash you’ll need for each rank of legendary item:

Rank 1 (190 item level): 1,250 Soul Ash
Rank 2 (210 item level): 2,000 Soul Ash
Rank 3 (225 item level): 3,200 Soul Ash
Rank 4 (235 item level): 5,150 Soul Ash

You’ll earn Soul Ash from completing layers and quests in Torghast, but because you can only earn 600 Soul Ash a week from completing a Torghast wing and 1,200 Soul Ash a week by completing both Torghast wings, that means there’s a soft time cap on when you can actually craft legendaries. It’s simply not currently possible to create legendary items in the game faster than you’re able to earn Soul Ash.

Where Do I Find Legendary Recipes?

Legendary Recipes are both the simplest and most frustrating element of the crafting process.

Legendary Recipes are acquired by completing certain quests, defeating dungeon bosses, and participating in other endgame content. As you may have already guessed, that means that acquiring the recipe you’re looking for may require you to get lucky and have it drop from a specific source.

While it doesn’t seem like the drop rate for these recipes will be too low, there are some recipes that you’re absolutely going to have to grind for.

How Do I Craft a Legendary Item in Shadowlands?

Once you’ve gathered all the necessary legendary item materials, you’ll want to head to Torghast and enter the room located directly to the right of the dungeon’s entrance.

There, you’ll find an NPC called the Runecarver who will guide you through the legendary item creation process. This is also where you’ll go if you want to upgrade your existing legendary items. The good news is that the Runecarver is found right at the entrance of Torghast, which means that you won’t have to work your way through the dungeon just to access its services (as long as you have the appropriate materials).
