Second Extinction: Release Date, Gameplay, Trailer, and News

Second Extinction blends three of our favorite things: dinosaurs, Left 4 Dead, and Destiny. Here's what you need to know:

First revealed during May’s Xbox Series X stream, Second Extinction is quickly becoming one of the most interesting action titles on the horizon.

Developed by Systemic Reaction, Second Extinction seemingly started with the simple pitch of “Evil Mutant Dinosaurs have taken over the Earth.” Appropriately enough, the game tells the story of a future in which dinosaurs have reclaimed the planet. As you may imagine, humanity decides that it won’t have any of that nonsense and launches a mission to destroy the dinosaurs.

The plot is certainly light, but we’re impressed by the execution of this concept at this early stage. The dinosaurs look great, and the general design of the game combines lovable sci-fi tropes and the aesthetics of those old B-movies that imagine some kind of dinosaur-driven apocalypse.

What really has us intrigued, though, is the gameplay. Essentially, Second Extinction combines elements of Left 4 Dead and Destiny. It sees you and two friends wander through dinosaur ridden worlds and not only work together to defeat the dinosaur menace but improve your skills along the way.

Some of the specifics are a little vague at the moment, but it sounds like the basic idea is that you and your friends will drop onto a map and be assigned a series of objectives. The goal is to complete those objectives and find a way to make it out alive. It seems that the dinosaurs may be too powerful to eliminate entirely, so the idea of surviving for as long as possible before escaping appears to be a slightly more realistic ambition.

Interestingly, you’ll be able to upgrade your characters and weapons using resources acquired throughout these missions. That’s where the Destiny elements of the game come into play, though we have seen a slightly similar concept in titles like Warhammer: Vermintide.

Actually, it’s games like Vermintide that leave us feeling so excited about the potential of Second Extinction. Getting together with friends and mowing down mobs of enemies is generally a good time, but the promise of light RPG elements to keep things fresh suggests there could be more to this game than just some co-op action. We’re also generally supportive of titles that use dinosaurs over zombies, mutants, and aliens as the primary antagonists.
