Link Tank: Why Andrew Garfield was the MVP of 2021
How Andrew Garfield had a career year, Baby Shark hits a massive YouTube milestone, Real Steel could become a TV series, and more in Link Tank!
Did any performer have a better year than Andrew Garfield in 2021?
“Exploring grief on a public platform can be cathartic, and Andrew Garfield has been sharing his as he’s promoted tick, tick…BOOM! Now, the Screen Actors Guild has nominated him for his work in bringing Jonathan Larson to life in the Lin-Manuel Miranda-directed musical, fresh from his Golden Globes win for the role. But his response to his nomination shows a profound understanding of everything that Jonathan Larson stood for, as well as the exploration of one’s own grief through art.”
There have been discussions about a Real Steel 2 for quite some time, but now it looks like the series could find new life as a series on Dinsey+.
“Real Steel is one of the greatest sci-fi sports movies of all time. Granted, the subgenre of sci-fi sports movies is pretty slim—especially ones where the entire movie focuses on that theme—but Real Steel is near the top of the list. And now, after years of the film’s fan base clamoring for more, it might actually be happening.”
Is the 2014 reboot of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles all that bad? Let’s revisit the infamous revival of the beloved series.
“It’s also like Mr. Potato Head in that the turtles became an extremely popular toy. Their main success, a children’s animated show running from 1987 through 1996 that spun off live-action movies and an iconic video game, made them staples to ‘90s kids everywhere. The pizza-loving turtles became so ubiquitous that they’re a part of the collective memory of the ‘90s, like Rainforest Cafes. Reboots were inevitable.”
The earth has a lot of people, but Baby Shark has even more views on YouTube.
“Having achieved more views than the entire human population with its video, Baby Shark has become one of the most notable cultural phenomena generating tremendous amounts of engagement across the world. Accompanied by its iconic songs, dances, and characters, it took the world by storm with the viral dance challenge called the #BabySharkChallenge, which everyone from little kids to the biggest global pop stars participated in. In addition to the viral challenge, its song swept the music charts recording a 20-week streak on Billboard’s Hot 100 and certifying RIAA Diamond (11x Platinum) and BRIT certified 2x Platinum.”

How I Met Your Father, the reboot of How I Met Your Mother, has the same premise as the original? Yeah, that’s the only good thing we have to say about this one.
“Divisive finale aside, How I Met Your Mother was a game-changer in the world of network sitcoms. While contemporaries like Modern Family and The Office did away with studio audiences and adapted single-camera setups, the winding story of boy-meets-girl-who-will-bear-his-children took a hybrid approach: Its many freeze frames, flashbacks, flash-forwards, and overlapping storylines were shot like a traditional multi-camera sitcom, but they made it impossible to be viewed by a live studio audience in a straightforward manner. (The laugh track came from a crowd watching a completed episode at a later date.) But it sure made it fun to watch.”
Are you still struggling to find an Xbox Series X or PlayStation 5 for sale? Perhaps you’re looking in the wrong places.
“Trying to get your hands on a PlayStation 5 or one of Microsoft’s next-gen consoles—the Xbox Series X and the smaller, less-powerful Xbox Series S—remains a fool’s errand. The stock sells out as soon as it becomes available. When it pops up from unofficial retailers, it does so with a staggering markup.”
