Open letter to whoever put a Graham Norton graphic over tonight's Doctor Who

Doctor Who: The Time Of Angels was building to its tense climax: so who decided a cartoon of Graham Norton should play over the top of it?

Published on Apr 24, 2010

An open letter to the BBC regarding tonight’s Doctor Who

Dear BBC,

Probably a year or so ago now, Steven Moffat was hunched over his computer, putting together the latest in a long line of intricate, clever and tense scripts for Doctor Who. He had a real treat in store for us: not only was he set to answer some questions about the character of River Song, but he was also bringing back the brilliant weeping angels. You’ll know all about them. They’ve helped sell you lots of DVDs.

What was particularly encouraging this time was that he had a two-parter planned for the angels, and it’s fair to say that many of us were really, really looking forward to the episode, and the cliffhanger he came up with to join the two parts together.

However, someone within your organisation had a brainwave. For they decided that what would help the tension in the last minute of a very good, tense and occasionally scary Doctor Who moment would be to play a cartoon Graham Norton over Matt Smith, just as he was delivering one of his pivotal speeches of the episode.

A cartoon Graham Norton? Have they started putting blue pop in your vending machine or something?

Steven Moffat always comes across as a very pleasant, very polite man. I have no idea whether he’ll be complaining to whoever thought the overlaying of this particular promo was a good idea. But I’d like to.

Seriously: I get that you need to promote your latest months-long advert for whatever show Andrew Lloyd Webber is flogging next, but can’t we go back to the compromise we all thought we’d agreed on? Can’t you just gabble over the end credits like you usually do? Granted, it knackers it up a little for those of us who, er, like to sing along to the end credits music, but we all have our prices to pay.

Bottom line: can you do us the simple courtesy of leaving your silly cartoons until the episode has actually finished? So that those of us who appreciate the work that goes into building up a tense 45 minutes of drama can enjoy it without distraction? You’re hardly ITV, are you?

Many thanks for your time. And once you’ve addressed this, can you get round to sorting out a new series of Torchwood too?

Regards,

Simon
Den Of Geek

PS We’re counting: that’s twice Mr Norton’s programmes have intruded on Doctor Who since it was revived. Three times, and we send the angels over...

PPS If you work at BBC Scotland, ignore the above - apparently it was only us south of the border who were Norton-ed.

In case you don't know what this is all about, here's the clip (thanks to paulychilds) - don't click on this if you haven't seen the episode!

Our review of The Time Of Angels is here...

Not on the BBC Scotland version they didn't, thankfully. Which is interesting since they did plug Who in the same way over the end of Total Wipeout... Wonder if there's a Who fan at BBC Scotland that understands the importance of not messing up the show like that...

You can fill in a complaint form on the BBC website: https://www.bbc.co.uk/complaints/forms/ I've already done it.

My complaint to the BBC was sent literally minutes after the event occured. Very disappointed. Who wants to see a cartoon Norton when the main characters in a drama series are being stalked by creepy stone Angels in a pivotal cliffhanger moment? Not me.

Takes me back to the night of 26 March 2005 and the long-awaited return of the Time Lord to our screens when "everyone's favourite" camp Irish funnyman and whore to the BBC interrupted the opening episode with his idiotic laughter ... perhaps the Daleks aren't Dr. Who's most feared enemy after all ...

I personally think we should take Graham Norton to the 'Very Dark Caves' (its almost like being Blind) and re-bury him under the pile of rocks he was left under by Dougal and Ted...left him there, to rot in his own little iritaing campy hell, slowly decaying and putrifying under tonnes of rubble so us, the general public do not ever have to see or hear his insufferable voice or face ever again, be it in cartoon form or even worse in the flesh

what I couldn't understand was that it WAS advertised during the ending credits too, AND just before the show started... complaint sent to BBC.

I suspect I will be one of thousands of people sending the BBC complaints about this issue. Here is the one I submitted via their website, minutes after this dreadful occurrence: "I can barely contain my anger. You use your flagship family drama programme to experiment with a crass, inappropriate and intrusive "coming next" animation??? The cast, crew and production team spend MONTHS perfecting the tense, cliffhanger climax to the show - that my family and I have looked forward to for EVEN LONGER - then have the crucial moment spoiled by some childish animation of Graham Norton advertising a programme I would not cross the road to watch were I starved of TV for a thousand years!?!?!? What the hell are you THINKING about? Whichever' genius' thought up this 'wheeze' should be sacked ON THE SPOT! On the one hand you produce world class TV entertainment. On the other your idiotic editorial policy RUINS the viewing experience for EVERYONE. Apologies but all I can think of to say is: CHRIST. ON. A. BIKE. Please (times infinity) never EVER do this again."

In the interests of balance, I should point out that Total Wipeout had a little Dalek graphic right before the end too, and this is by no means targeting Doctor Who alone. But then the most dramatic revelation of Total Wipeout was, as Charlie Brooker put it, "Ha, he done fell in the water". Again.

I realise this opinion won't be popular: but get a life! It was just a cartoon, nobody died. It wasn't a very good cliffhanger moment anyway.

It's obviously a massive miscalculation by the Beeb. Either that or a subliminal ad for HD, as I didn't notice it on BBC HD. Is Points Of View still going? If so, might be worth checking it out this week.

Fantastic! (the complaint, not the cartoon). I posted as soon as the episode finished (really put out by that cartoon). The fact that the announcer then told us the exact same thing 30 seconds later really put the boot in. If I'm really into a programme, I don't care what's on next. It almost killed the mood - the 'don't put the Doctor in a trap' line was in the original trailers before the series began.

I'm glad that everyone else seems as p1ssed off about this as me and my girlfriend were. I have just dropped my complaint to the BBC too. I feel traumatised by it all. I'm afraid to watch anything on BBC1 now in case Graham Norton's massive cartoon face pops up again and tells me to watch his sh1tty reality TV show! Seriously though, what were they thinking? Don't make Dr Who nerds angry!

I also wish the continuity announcer wouldn't start yelling as soon as the credits start. It's not just Dr Who that suffers - but in this instance the Norton graphic really warranted a complaint. They got one as soon as I fired up the PC this morning.

BBC Northern Ireland didn't show it either and Norton is Irish! It is a silly place to put a cartoon, in the final scene of a tense episode. Don't they know loads of people watch tv they have recorded which makes the cartoon reminder even more useless

This is just more lameness in an ongoing world of lame that infests TV. I haven't bothered watching Stargate:Universe on Sky because of what they do (and did to Atlantis, for instance) - I'll buy the box set and watch it without the input of the talentless twits that now seem to have progressed to the BBC. It's hitting the point where if you take a show seriously and enjoy the viewing, you almost shouldn't risk watching it on telly!

Just so you know, your fellow fans in Canada feel your pain. Sadly, the cliffhanger got spoiled for me as I saw the reports (we don't see the episode here for another 2 weeks), but it was enough that even I sent a complaint to the BBC for what good it'll do. What worries me is the banner is in the same style as that rather childish cartoon ident the BBC launched featuring Doctor Who and other BBC stars. Could this become a regular part of the broadcast? You guys pay the licence fees -- complain loud and long! (Or, I guess, move to Scotland ;) )

Reading the BBC news item the only thing that is conceded to is that it was badly timed. What do they mean timed? Get those crappy little things off my tv. They plague so many shows. It's not as if I would even consider for one moment to watch the snotty faced Norton on anything and Lloyd-Webber freaks me out. I have a hard time coping with programmes that treat me like I have only a 2 minute memory and constantly repeat themselves and the footage for anything factual. At least have the common decency to allow unspoiled viewing of a flagship show.

http://i41.tinypic.com/2rosw12.jpg - Basically the problem is BBC are being run by the same kind of moron suits as American commercial outfits, they are acting as though they need with desperation viewers to watch as many televion programmes as possible rather than that they are already being funded by taxpayers... They don't need to sell stuff to us, god. F/k off you bunch of nationalist devolutionary-slime anti-british tw/s!

Re: Open letter to whoever put a Graham Norton graphic over tonight's Doctor Who
Posted By LittleTime 1 April 25, 2010 06:41:53 PM

The emphasis of the most of the complaints thus far has mostly been 'Graham Norton has spoiled my Doctor Who episode'. This needs to shift to 'I don't want these adverts in any BBC programming - at all, whatsoever'. Remember, its your licence fee - you have a say.

Re: Open letter to whoever put a Graham Norton graphic over tonight's Doctor Who
Posted By Liv123 1 April 25, 2010 07:32:28 PM

Really pleased this has been addresses by the beeb as it was the WORST timing ever! It would have been laughable if it wasn't SO annoying and disrespectful to all that worked so hard on it. And a quick note to the person that said 'get a life' - yes of course no-one died. No-one is saying this is life and death, we're just saying it was REALLY annoying which it was! For me it wasn't even about the cliffhanger (which granted was a bit sudden, yes) but about the crappy cartoon and voice over the Doctors big angry speech. A quick note though to all that are being mean about Graham Norton - it wasn't actually his fault!! He doesn't sit in a darkened room planning these things!! Purely a c*ck up by the beeb and I do doubt they'll do that again.

Just realised my comment about the cliffhanger being sudden was really dumb! Of course it was sudden, it was a cliffhanger! - sorry.

Got to agree with all the above re. Mr. Norton's crapping all over our favourite programme. Except for 'Jenni' of course. Nobody died? Course they didn't. So when you go back to your job as Head of Continuity at the Beeb, that'll be your justification for doing the same thing over and over again? You are a sad sorry little apologist for the sad sorry suits who think they can sit up there in Broadcasting House and copy everything they do on Sky because it's a really good business model or some such guff. Final comment.. I pay my licence fee for UNINTERRUPTED programming. Just for you Jenni, yes that is a long word, but it means NO INTERRUPTIONS. Ever!

Here in America, we will get a heavily edited, heavily commercialized version. Just like The Beast Below (many, many obnoxious commercials featuring a guest appearance by the British Time Traveling Guy).

THANK GOD I watched it on iplayer later! I would have certainly thrown crockery at the screen otherwise, especially as the residual hatred of hearing Norton's moronic raspy cackle over the opening sequence of The Doctor's return is still fresh i my memory from all those years ago, I suspect the sight of that hideous and appallingly timed cartoon would have propelled me into anger management! What the hell were they thinking?! There is no way that would have happened in a climactic moment of the football or Dead-enders and aside from the fact they have now angered a mob of Dr fans; who on earth thought that would be a good idea for the end of any show?! It's hideous!

Even my other half who is not really a Who fan (but knows a thing or two about graphic design) thought this was just plain stupid. One more point she added: the damn caption came up in yellow text on white (or vice-versa), so it was almost impossible to read, thus defeating the object!
