Lost’s Damon Lindelof to rewrite Alien prequel

Ridley Scott’s planned prequel to Alien brings in the co-creator of Lost to work on the script…

Published on Jul 29, 2010

Damon Lindelof hasn't been short of screenwriting assignments. But that hasn't stopped him taking more work, for as it turns out, he's reportedly signed on to work on Ridley Scott's planned Alien prequel.

According to Deadline, Lindelof has agreed to do rewrite work on the script for the film, which 20th Century Fox is looking for director Ridley Scott to commit to as his next movie (only one film is being talked about here, not the second of the proposed Alien prequels).

Deadline reports that Lindelof "jumped" at the chance to work on the film, and he's set to start work on retooling Jon Spaihts' screenplay once he's finished up on the Star Trek sequel script (which he's co-writing with Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci. The trio also penned Cowboys And Aliens, which is due next year).

This will inevitably soon move the emphasis back to Ridley Scott, who hasn't chosen his next directing job post-Robin Hood. His slate is easily one of the busiest in Hollywood, though, and assuming that Lindelof gets the Alien script where everyone wants it to be by the end of the year, there's still no guarantee that Scott would jump aboard the project immediately. It does appear to be one of his preferred projects, though, so here's hoping...

So we can now expect a host of new characters turning up in the final act instead of tidying up any loose ends in the plot?

Ass-hole that better not have been a spoiler for lost season 6 which I haven't got around to watching yet. I mean seriously you have just ruined the entire season for me, thanks mate!

I guess you won't want to know how the world ended either then?

Yes - Sigourney Weaver's mother and the Pilot Alien walking hand in hand into the light...

Hollywood should just bin this script just now - if the ST reboot is anything to go by. Why is Ledelof getting work after the utter garbage that was LOST? I'm hoping Ridley Scott will take this on and should have complete say over the script....and don't let Sigoureny Weaver have a say either. She's an actor.

@ Monkey. I agree that Ridley should have full creative control on this project, but why bash Weaver? She knows the material WAY better than anyone else. I'm not a fan of Lost, but it did generate millions of dollars in revenue and a huge fan base. Those writers were onto something there.

@KWillyvox - I've nothing against her. She has added a great deal to the previous movies. I just don't think SW will have anything useful to add. I thought she would have a great input when I knew she was involved with A3&4 but...well, I was wrong. She has said she would be interested in working with only Cameron on another Alien themed movie and given that she was quite heavily involved with him on Avatar I think it is likely. I really like the idea of a prequel but I do think that to get something original using the Alien theme predating Nostromo period Cameron should move away from SW.

Let me guess - the Space Jockey came from a Light Cave and he forgot to plug the drain so all the Aliens came out.

Lindelof was one of the creative minds behind one the greatest TV series in history and had more than a helping hand in making the Star Trek re-boot so damn good. I think the script is in safe hands.

This is promising, although the ST pre-quel was all CGI and far too contemporary, let alone GQ-guy-ish. I hope this movie happens and it's dark, clever, has a good score, and no PC-ism's wreck it!

bashing the new Trek film really sets the men from the basement dwelling action figure owners.

After the insult to my inteligence that was Lost, I made a solumn vow never to watch anything involving Damon Lindelof or Carlton Cuse. The news that Lindelof is re-writing the script for the Alien Prequel is the most depressing thing i've heard this year. I honestly think Lost is the WORST show EVER made. it was an insult to the loyal veiwers who were led to believe that they (DL & CC) knew where the story was going, when clearly they didn't. It was an insult to the actors who did there best to make their characters consistant and believable, without having the first idea what rediculous plot twists were round the corner (rendering their performances inconsistant and confused). An insult to the network who made the unprecedented step of actually setting an end date so the makers COULD make a cohesive production. And finally an insult science, religion and basic honest to goodness storytelling. In short, i didn't like Lost.

@Interference - if you are insuating that parties that appreciated the new trek film are sad basement types, then I agree. For surely, anyone that thought the (suitably high voice) "My name is James Tiberius.." or the Spock love aspect was in anyway fresh, clever groundbreaking or even entertaining has issues.
