Superheroes aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. From the box office-shattering reciepts of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to the television triumphs of Watchmen and Doom Patrol, 2019 was a very good year for costumed crime fighters. Here’s a rundown of some of our favorite gift ideas this year that will make you a shopping superhero!
Watchmen Companion
Now that the first (only?) season of HBO’s Watchmen is over, interest in all things based on the story are once again high. In a bit of timeliness that would make Dr. Manhattan proud, DC has just released ths volume of ephemeral material from the 1980s that includes materials from the Watchmen RPG, comic cameos, and more. The most interesting part? All of this stuff was endorsed by Alan Moore himself. How’s that for a Christmas miracle?

Spider-Man: Rock Reflections of a Superhero
For the Marvel fan who seemingly has it all we recommend this jaw-dropping release from 1975 that tells the story of Spider-Man through rock music. With narration from Stan Lee himself and songs like “Peter Stays and Spider-Man Goes,” and the Led Zeppelin-esque “Doctor Octopus Part II” (sample lyric: “Fantastic Four, and you there The Hulk, you’re going to cry like a baby…and you’re gonna sulk”) this album is an incredibly sincere — if super goofy — tribute to Spidey that every fan of the character should hear.

Doom Patrol: The Complete First Season Blu-ray
Originally airing on DC Universe, Doom Patrol is something of a TV miracle. A weird and profoundly touching exploration of trauma and family dynamics that also happens to be hilarious and also work as a great superhero show. The less you know about this series going into it the better, but take our word for that that is some amazing television right here, and easily one of 2019’s best shows overall.

Avengers: Endgame
“Sticking the landing” is a term that is much ballyhooed these days, and it’s easy to understand why. So many pop culture franchises have blown the final act that disapointment has become far too commonplace. Fortunately this is not a problem that Avengers: Endgame has. There’s never been a better live-action Spider-Man than Tom Holland, and this movie allows the character to reach surprising new heights. We’re beyond thrilled that this iteration of the character will remain in the MCU, especially given the events of this film’s mid-credits scene.
