Supernatural Season 15 Ending Will Be Bittersweet

Misha Collins has a unique perspective on The CW’s mega fandom hit Supernatural. His character Castiel was introduced in season 4 and never meant to become a series regular. The popularity of Castiel among fans secured his place, and now he’s closing out the entire series eleven years later.

“You don’t get into this line of work for job security and none of us ever expected to work on anything for this long,” Collins said. “I mean, it’s not hyperbolic to say that it feels like a family. You know, we just all know each other so well and been through so much together. It’s such a significant chunk of our lives. We haven’t dreaded going to work. We really like the show and we like each other and it’s going to be hard to part with.”

One question on a lot of fans minds going into Supernatural season 15. will surely be what will become of the angel Castiel. In response to Den of Geek pointing out that some fans would like a “human” Cas for the end, Misha Collins said, “I would almost go in the opposite direction and see Castiel become some sort of purely ethereal, metaphysical, invisible being or something like that.” 

Collins described a purely human Cas as “strangely unsatisfying.”

“So yeah, I hope for death or something transcendental.” Collins said.

Supernatural has built up such steam through a strong run on the CW that each season’s ending was simply a chance to do another big cliffhanger to lead into the next. Executive producer Robert Singer cites “tremendous support” from the CW for their longevity and security in coming up with season after season. A possible end “didn’t really hit until last season.”

Sometimes those cliffhangers could spell trouble, like when executive producer and former showrunner Sera Gamble left to pursue other projects.

Another example includes season 7, Sera Gamble’s last year, when Castiel and Dean were left in purgatory. Singer said, “She left the show and I said, ‘Oh thanks, Sera, that’s great. How am I going to get out of this one with them?’ It’s just something we do every year.”

This season’s and purgatory’s were the hardest to recover story-wise, Singer said. “[Executive Producer] Andrew [Dabb] was more confident about getting into Season 15 than I was, to tell you the truth and that was good because I was a little, ‘Oh gee, I don’t know.’”

The end of the Supernatural season 14 saw Dean, Sam and Castiel facing an undead horde — including reanimated corpses and ghosts that were re-released from Hell. Singer indicates that season 15 will pick up right where the previous season left off, and the story of the ghosts will be resolved by episode four or so. Then the season will dive further into the saga of what God’s up to and what happens with Jack, who currently resides in The Empty.

Singer described having chats with Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki and Andrew Dabb since the end of season 14 about the end.

“The one thing we knew that we didn’t want to do was not know when the ending was,” Singer said. 

“I think there’s of course this selfish egocentric part of me that is really thinking abouthow it’s a new beginning for me and what the next chapter in my life is,” Misha Collins explained. He went on to say that he did wonder what the legacy of the show might be, and whether it might live on in a new series or movie. He also offered his own idea on how that could be accomplished.

“We’ve done a handful of episodes that were very meta, that we’re sort of talking about the fandom or poking fun at ourselves,” Collins said. “So, if we ever did amovie or a reboot I would love to see something like that where we’re sort ofpoking fun at ourselves. I’d love to see us washed up in some way. I mean, wealready are but, really play to that.”

“I think we’re all really happy with the way this thing is going to go,” Singer said. Singer teased certain guest stars and characters coming back, but didn’t want to ruin the surprise. He stated that he was excited for fans to see the end, hopes they like and said they were working towards something special, but stresses the end won’t be enigmatic like the infamous cut-to-black on the finale of The Sopranos.

“I think the end will be bittersweet for us but I think it will also be bittersweet for the fans, but that’s okay,” Singer said. “Tears of joy mixed in with tears of sadness, I don’t think you can beat that.”

Supernatural’s 15th and final season premieres Thursday  October 10th on the CW.
