Strange Adventures: Adam Strange TV Series Coming to HBO MAX

HBO MAX will be home to Strange Adventures, a new anthology series starring Adam Strange set in the DC Universe.

Greg Berlanti, already the busiest man in superhero TV, if not all of Hollywood, isn’t slowing down any time soon. With HBO MAX continuing to unveil new shows in the leadup to its May 2020 launch, they’re also going all in on their DC superhero live action shows. In addition to Doom Patrol season 2 and a new series called DC Superhero High (from executive producer Elizabeth Banks), they’ve enlisted Berlanti to create two new DC shows. The first is a mysterious Green Lantern project, and the other is Strange Adventures.

HBO says that Strange Adventures “will feature characters from across the DC canon” and the one-hour drama “will explore close-ended morality tales about the intersecting lives of mortals and superhumans.” But they also promise that central to this is “about “Adam Strange, an archaeologist-turned-intergalactic-hero when he’s zeta-beamed to planet Rann.” This isn’t the first time in recent years Adam Strange has been brought to television, having served as a central character on the recently cancelled but utterly brilliant Krypton, where he was played by Shaun Sipos. Strange Adventures seems unlikely to have any connection to that series. The series takes its name from an old DC Comics sci-fi anthology title, which was briefly home to the Adam Strange character.

“Both of these original DC properties we’ll be creating for HBO Max will be unlike anything seen on television,” Berlanti said in a statement. “An anthology series of cautionary tales set in a world where superpowers exist, and, in what promises to be our biggest DC show ever made, we will be going to space with a Green Lantern television series, but I can’t reveal any more about that just yet.”

In what is probably not a coincidence, Strange Adventures is also the title of an upcoming prestige comic book series from the Mister Miracle creative team of Tom King and Mitch Gerads (with the brilliant Doc Shaner joining the party).

Berlanti will produce alongside Sarah Schechter (Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, Titans, Doom Patrol), with John Stephens (Gotham, Gossip Girl) serving as showrunner. Charlie Huston (Powers, Gotham) is a co-executive producer, Brigitte Hales (Once Upon a Time) is a producer, and Selwyn Seyfu Hinds (Dominique Laveau: Voodoo Child, The Twilight Zone) is a consulting producer.

No release date has been announced, but HBO MAX will launch in May of 2020, so don’t expect Strange Adventures any time before 2021. We’ll update this as more information becomes available.
