Green Lantern HBO Max Series Will Span Decades, Focus on Two Green Lanterns

Earth-12's Green Lantern Corps and Sinestro are headed to HBO Max.

In brightest day, in blackest night, no franchise shall escape my sight on HBO Max. With Warner Media revealing the first details of their HBO Max streaming service, the inevitable subject of DC superhero properties was bound to come up. And one of the first new DC TV series on the horizon for the new service? Green Lantern.

Greg Berlanti, the busiest man in genre television, and the man who helped bring the Arrowverse to life over on the CW is overseeing two new live action superhero series for HBO MAX. One of these is Strange Adventures, a superhero anthology series starring Adam Strange. The other is a mysterious title focused on the world of the Green Lantern Corps.

At the 2020 Winter TCA press tour, HBO Max Head of Original Content Sarah Aubrey shared an important update on the series from Berlanti.

“The series is going to span several decades and focus on the origin story of two major Green Lanterns on Earth while also looking into Sinestro,” Berlanti said.

Thanks to The CW’s ambitious crossover Crisis on Infinite Earths, Berlanti has established that the Green Lantern Corps reside on Earth-12. Now we know two of those Green Lanterns will be the focus of the series. Will one of those Lanterns be Hal Jordan, or will we finally get John Stewart in live action? Or could this series go all in and bring us Jessica Cruz, Simon Baz, Kyle Rayner, Guy Gardner, or even further back in the Green Lantern history? Regardless of which two the series go with, they will have to contend with both Sinestro and potentially time travel.

It’s not clear at this time what this means for the prospects of the Green Lantern Corps movie that has long been in development at Warner Bros. Pictures under writers like Geoff Johns and David S. Goyer. As of November 2019, the studio claimed the film was still in their plans. In all likelihood though, the HBO Max series will replace that project, and this version of Green Lantern will be the definitive live action interpretation of this mythology for the foreseeable future.

No release date has been announced, but HBO Max will launch in May of 2020, so don’t expect this Green Lantern TV series any time before 2021. We’ll update this as more information becomes available.
