This Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi article contains spoilers.

After The Book of Boba Fett carved out a new path for the famous bounty hunter to mixed results, some Star Wars fans were rightfully worried about what direction the next big Disney+ offering would take. Obi-Wan Kenobi would not only bring back Ewan McGregor to the role he first played in 1999-2005 but it would explore stories about the Jedi Master that at a first glance seemed unnecessary.

Before the new live-action series, fans largely assumed that Obi-Wan had spent the decades that followed Revenge of the Sith as a hermit on Tatooine, watching over Luke from afar until the time was right in A New Hope. But Obi-Wan Kenobi announced from the very beginning that it would change what we knew about the Jedi’s exile on the desert planet: suddenly there were confrontations with Inquisitors, missions to neon-lit cities full of stormtroopers, a battle in an Imperial base and, most concerning of all, a previously unseen rematch between Obi-Wan and Darth Vader that ran the risk of muddying the effect of their final duel on the Death Star.

Plus, the biggest elephant in the room: glimpses of a young Luke Skywalker playing on the Lars homestead seemingly teased an adventure revolving around the boy who would one day become the last Jedi. How would Obi-Wan spending so much time with little Luke change (or even break) what we knew about the Original Trilogy?

Well, while some fans have continued to express concerns about the ways Obi-Wan Kenobi is tweaking Star Wars continuity, the show has been largely able to circumvent any canon issues. For example, after weeks of worrying that the show had killed off the Grand Inquisitor a few years too soon, fans were rewarded for their faith with the reveal that the villain had only been playing dead in order to manipulate Reva.

And instead of sending little Luke on a galactic adventure with Obi-Wan, the show once again turned fan expectation on its head, giving us a young Princess Leia during her most formative years. Some might even say that Leia’s time with Obi-Wan in the years before A New Hope has actually enhanced what we know about their relationship in the original Star Wars film. Suddenly, Leia asking Obi-Wan for help in the first act of the 1977 film seems much more personal.

The Obi-Wan Kenobi finale ties all of the season’s plot threads together: Obi-Wan and Darth Vader meet once again on the battlefield, while Reva has a change of heart when hunting little Luke Skywalker. Meanwhile, Leia makes it back to Alderaan and has one final sweet moment with Ben that sets up the Original Trilogy. Plus, we finally get the return of Liam Neeson as Qui-Gon Jinn!
