Raised by Wolves Season 2 is officially confirmed for the proverbial pack that is HBO Max’s ongoing content lineup.

Indeed, just two weeks after the September 3 premiere of the epic, stylistically-driven sci-fi drama on the premium cable channel’s streaming offshoot, a second season of Raised by Wolves has been ordered, with the WarnerMedia company citing a 50% audience growth for the show’s second week. The series is the creation of writer Aaron Guzikowski, who wrote screenplays such as Dune remake director Denis Villeneuve’s directorial breakthrough, Prisoners, and the 2017 Papillon remake, and also created the 2014-2015 Jason Momoa-starring crimes series, The Red Road. However, the initial hype for the series was anchored to the involvement of genre great Ridley Scott, who directed and executive-produced a duo of episodes.

As Sarah Aubrey, HBO Max Head of Original Content, lauds of the renewal of the far-future, other-planetary-set series in a statement:

“When I think of Raised by Wolves, I think of artistry; artistry in crafting a compelling storyline, artistry in the out-of-this-world production design, special effects and cinematography, artistry in our actor’s portrayals of these memorable characters, and artistry attached to the legendary work of Ridley Scott, Aaron Guzikowski and our phenomenal crew.” She adds, “This chart-topping series beautifully weaves together Ridley’s hallmarks of sci-fi and horror while offering fans one of the most original storylines they’ve seen in some time. I can’t wait to see what’s in store for Season 2.”

Raised by Wolves showcases an ambitious story set on mysterious (fact-based) planet Kepler 22b during an early stage of colonization by human life, centered on a pair of androids, Mother (Amanda Collin) and Father (Abubakar Salim), who have been tasked to raise and care for a group of human children, most focused on the inquisitive Campion (Winta McGrath). However, the synthetic overseers of this makeshift nursery take their duties to frighteningly literal, logic-loop-addled levels, slaughtering adults who they perceive as threats to their task; a development that compounds the human colonists’ infighting, which has them divided into ideological factions of Atheists and the sun-god-worshipping Mithraic. The cast also consists of Travis Fimmel, Jordan Loughran, Niamh Algar, Matias Varela, Felix Jamieson, Ethan Hazzard, Aasiya Shah and Ivy Wong.

The legendary director of Alien fame, Ridley Scott, actually helmed the pilot and second episode. In a statement that also seems to affirm his involvement with Season 2, Scott talks about the show’s early hush-hush nature (brandishing the intriguingly androgynous image of Collin’s Mother,) and the creative process going into Season 2, explaining:

“Being a dyed-in-the-wool advertising man, I was knocked out by the extraordinary campaign done by HBO Max marketing, which conveyed the ambitious storyline in such a provocative and tactile manner, and deftly positioned our first season of Raised by Wolves as a “must watch” show.” Scott adds, “It must have been a notable challenge to selectively plumb the riches in Aaron’s storylines. We were even happier that audiences have responded so enthusiastically. We are already deep into the ‘layers’ of Season 2, as Aaron has begun to shape what we think will be another brilliant season to inspire the imagination.”

Raised by Wolves Season 2 doesn’t have a production or release window as of yet, and it doesn’t seem likely that any progress will occur in the remainder of COVID-riddled 2020. However, the inaugural season of the series remains ongoing, having settled into a weekly rollout of two episodes after debuting the first three on September 3. Indeed, Episodes 6 and 7 have just hit HBO Max today.
