Legends of Tomorrow: Inside the Return of John Constantine
Constantine flirts with Captain Cold and asks for help with a little girl's demonic possession in the midseason return.
When Den of Geek was part of a group of TV reporters who visited the Legends of Tomorrow set back in the fall, one of the most-anticipated and discussed topics was Constantine’s upcoming appearance on the show.
Legends of Tomorrow will return February 12th for its midseason premiere, which will see Matt Ryan reprising his role as the chainsmoking, bisexual demonologist as part of a two-episode arc that began in the midseason finale.
“I’ve gotten to work with Matt before on Arrow, but I think I was pretty much possessed the whole time,” said Caity Lotz (Sara), who is referring to the time Constantine popped up on Arrow Season 4 to save a recently-resurrected Sara’s soul. “He is a fabulous actor. We had so much fun on set.”
How will Sara respond to the demand Constantine made in the final moments of the Legends midseason finale that he return the favor of her saved soul by helping him out?
“I mean he is like this really cocky guy who thinks he is the ‘ish,'” said Lotz. “I think Sara throws him for a loop because he thinks he is all impressive but then she is like [makes attack noises] takes everybody down. Yeah, I think they are friends. They like each other.”
How will other Waverider crew members react to Constantine’s arrival on the ship? Maisie Richardson-Sellers (Amaya/Vixen) notes that he has “a different kind of male presence,” which “shakes everyone up.” For Nate and, in particular, his complicated relationship with Amaya, this results in some jealousy.
“There’s quite a fun dynamic with Nate as well,” teased Richardson-Sellers. “He gets a little bit jealous … I think just his ballsy sort of energy and his skills that he has. Amaya definitely admires that, and loves the fact that he’s so gung-ho about everything. She looks up to him, definitely.”
It doesn’t seem like Nate has anything to worry about when it comes to Amaya. Constantine is interested in another member of the Waverider crew: Captain Cold.
“I’ve only had one scene with him [so far],” said Dominic Purcell (Mick/Heat Wave) of Constantine, “and that was last week. He was hitting on Wentworth’s character.”
It’s unclear how far the flirtation will go (though executive producer Phil Klemmer’s mention of some “hot sex” on the Waverider certainly gives some clues), but Purcell said the scene they’d filmed so far was played for humor when it came to the Captain Cold/Heat Wave relationship.
“Citizen Cold is different to Captain Cold. Completely different. So Rory watching Citizen Cold and Trenchcoat [Purcell’s nickname for Constantine] flirt with one another was like too much for Rory … Too much information! Which makes it really funny. The scene is hysterical. We were all just on the floor laughing, so it’s all done in good fun.”
Legends of Tomorrow (and Constantine) returns February 12th at 8 p.m. on The CW.
