Star Wars: Six New Movies Currently in Development
According to Disney CEO Bob Iger, there are six new Star Wars movies currently in development at Disney and Lucasfilm.
There are “half a dozen Star Wars films in various stages of development,” according to Disney CEO Bob Iger (via Deadline). We know at least one of these movies will be directed, written, and produced by Game of Thrones creators D.B. Weiss and David Benioff, and it’s likely that the duo will have its hand in some of the other films.
Iger did not confirm any titles or additional directors or writers for the other five movies. The first of these new movies, the one to be directed by the Thrones duo, is set to arrive in Dec. 2022.
The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson is also working on his own trilogy of movies, separate from the films being developed by Weiss and Benioff, but Iger didn’t offer any updates on that front. We can make an educated guess that Johnson’s trilogy makes up three of those six potential movies, while Weiss and Benioff’s movies make up the other three, but we have no way of knowing for sure at the moment.
Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy told THR in April 2019 that she was sitting down with Weiss, Benioff, and Johnson to plan the next series of films: “We’re all sitting down to talk about, where do we go next? We’ve all had conversations about what the possibilities might be, but now we’re locking it down.”
This could mean that Johnson is collaborating with Weiss and Benioff on what’s coming after Episode IX or simply that each team needs to know what the other is doing. After all, Lucasfilm is very big on making the Star Wars franchise feel like one big, interconnected universe these days.
As for the setting of all these movies, that’s an even bigger mystery. We know that they all take place outside of the Skywalker Saga, which will conclude with Episode IX later this year, but what exactly does that mean? If you’ve followed the Star Wars universe outside of the movies, then you know that the history of the galaxy far, far away takes place over thousands of years, especially in the old Legends canon, which eventually even produced a Jedi origin story comic book. And that’s millennia before one of the more beloved eras of Star Wars: the Old Republic era of noble Jedi Knights facing off against massive Sith Empires for galactic domination.
The latter era is particularly interesting, in fact, since Kennedy has teased that Lucasfilm is working on something set in the Old Republic era: “You know, we talk about that all the time,” Kennedy said in regards to the Knights of the Old Republic franchise. “Yes, we are developing something to look at. Right now I have no idea where things might fall, but we have to be careful that there is a cadence to Star Wars that doesn’t start to feel like too much.”
Kennedy’s statement jives with a rumor that Weiss and Benioff’s movie series might be set in this era. Take that with a grain of salt, though. As for Johnson’s trilogy, the director has said in the past his movies won’t be related to the Old Republic.
We’ll keep you updated as we learn more about these new Star Wars movies. With a three-year gap between Episode IX and the first Weiss/Benioff film, it looks like we’ll have plenty of time to speculate. Until then, here’s a complete Star Wars movie and TV release date calendar!
