Pokemon Coco: Trailer for New Movie Teases Tarzan-Like Story
Set for a Japanese release this summer, Pokémon Coco is a jungle-set movie in the Pokémon universe.
The next film in the Pokémon animated movie franchise is titled Coco, and its first trailer has arrived online today. The trailer is in Japanese, by the way, since the film is premiering in Japan before its wider release. And in case you were wondering, this movie has nothing to do with the Pixar movie of the same name.
Before we get to the trailer, there’s just a little bit of housekeeping to do: this movie is the third one in the fresh continuity that began with 2017’s Pokémon the Movie: I Choose You! and continued with 2018’s Pokémon the Movie: The Power of Us. This timeline is a separate one to the Pokémon anime series, and it also isn’t connected to the live-action realms glimpsed in Pokémon: Detective Pikachu (as far as we know).
Whether the full English title ends up being Pokémon: Coco or Pokémon The Movie: Coco, or something else entirely, this movie seems like an interesting collection of ideas. Before we start rambling, take a look at the trailer for yourself:
Set in a luscious green jungle and seeming to draw inspiration from the tree-swinging action of Tarzan, Coco appears to be a rather self-contained affair that will introduce Ash Ketchum and Pikachu to some new human characters. The guy that is swinging around in the trees, almost acting like a Pokémon himself, should be an interesting addition to the franchise.
Also, we can’t help but wonder how the crying baby in that trailer factors into anything. Is this infant the child of the person that is swinging through the trees, perhaps? We’ll just have to wait and see, since this trailer gives very little away.
Although we don’t know the details of the film’s US release just yet, we do know that Pokémon he Movie: Coco (or whatever it ends up being called) will launch in Japan on July 10. As more news comes to light, particularly with regards to the wider release of the film, we’ll be sure to keep you updated.
