The legendary Panzer Dragoon Sega Saturn series is coming to VR. The VR version of these games will be developed by studio Wildman Inc and is currently known as Panzer Dragoon Voyage Record.

Since there is already some misinformation being spread about this project, lets clear a few things up. First off, this is different than the Panzer Dragoon remake that was previously announced. For one thing, it’s a VR title. It’s also not a full-on remake but rather a kind of VR reimagining of elements of the classic games.

Wildman states that this VR reimagining includes episodes from Panzer Dragoon, Panzer Dragoon II Zwei, and Panzer Dragoon Saga. That seems to mean the studio will be repackaging some of the levels (or episodes) from those games and reinterpreting them as VR experiences. That does not mean that the full content from those games will be included as part of this package.

That being the case, the final point we want to clarify concerns the name Panzer Dragoon Saga. For years, fans have begged for a proper remake or re-release of Panzer Dragoon Saga. That title converted the Panzer Dragoon series from an on-rails action title to an epic RPG. It’s one of the most beloved cult classics of its era and any (legal) attempts to play it today likely involve you sending several hundred dollars for an official copy. Sadly, all early signs indicate that Panzer Dragoon Voyage Record will not fully recreate Panzer Dragoon Saga, instead turning some episodes from those games into new first-person VR segments. You’ll even be able to use your VR controller as a handgun similar to the ones used by the heroes of the Panzer Dragoon series.

While the presence of Panzer Dragoon Saga in this instance feels like a bit of a tease, it actually makes quite a bit of sense to turn the on-rails Panzer Dragoon titles into VR action games. They’re kind of perfect for that environment, and early tests of the game have even seen participants hop into a special seat designed to emulate the movements of in-game dragon flight.

We don’t imagine that chair will be mass-marketed for this game’s release, but we look forward to learning more about Panzer Dragoon Voyage Record as it nears a likely 2021 Japanese release date for unspecified VR platforms.
