Elden Ring: Where to Find and Farm Every Type of Smithing Stone

Smithing Stones are some of the most valuable items in Elden Ring, and this guide should help you find as many of them as you need.

Elden Ring allows you to turn nearly any weapon in the game into some of the most powerful pieces of equipment imaginable, but before you can upgrade the game’s considerable arsenal, you’re going to have to find some of the rarest and most valuable items in the game: Smithing Stones and Somber Smithing Stones.

Smithing Stones will allow you to upgrade standard weapons to higher levels, while Somber Smithing Stones allow you to upgrade special and enhanced weapons. While it’s fairly easy to find basic Smithing Stones that will allow you to see whether or not a weapon is worth upgrading in the first place, it’s significantly more difficult to find some of the better Smithing Stones in the game. Some are so rare that you may only ever find one of them.

Since it can be so frustrating to find Smithing Stones in the wild (as well as the special Bell Bearing items that allow you to purchase them pretty much whenever you want), here is what we hope will be a helpful look at finding every kind of Smithing Stone in Elden Ring.

Elden Ring: Where to Find and Farm Smithing Stone (1) , Smithing Stone (2), and Smithing-Stone Miner’s Bell Bearing [1]

It’s usually pretty annoying to find and farm these basic Smithing Stones out in Elden Ring’s world, but there is a fairly simple way to unlock the ability to buy them whenever you want (assuming you have enough Runes, that is).

First, you’ll need to go to the Raya Lucaria Crystal Tunnel dungeon found here on Elden Ring’s map:

Raya Lucaria Crystal Tunnel dungeon location Elden Ring

Not only is this dungeon packed with enemies that drop a ton of basic Smithing Stones when you kill them (which makes this one of the best Smithing Stone stops in the game for a variety of basic drops), but once you defeat the dungeon’s boss (Crystalian), you’ll receive a special item called the Smithing-Stone Miner’s Bell Bearing [1]. Take that Bell Bearing to the Twin Maiden Husks at Roundtable Hold, and they’ll add Smithing Stones 1 and 2 to their inventory. In short, that means you can buy them whenever you want for the rest of the game for a very reasonable price!

If you’re looking to farm these stones before you reach that point, you’ll be happy to know that a lot of the “soldier” enemies you encounter at the start of the game will drop Smithing Stones fairly regularly. Just keep respawning and farming some near major Sites of Grace, and you should be able to replenish your reserves in no time.

It’s also pretty easy to farm Smithing Stone 2s from some of the slightly higher level enemies found in Castle Morne and other slightly more advanced parts of Elden Ring‘s early game, but if you need to find a few straggling stones right away, this guide offers a pretty good look at a few early locations where you can find a decent number of those stones.

Elden Ring: Where to Find and Farm Smithing Stone (3), Smithing Stone (4), and Smithing-Stone Miner’s Bell Bearing [2]

To unlock the ability to purchase unlimited amounts of Smithing Stones 3 and 4, head to the Sealed Tunnel area found here on Elden Ring’s map:

To the left of the Site of Grace you’ll find at the start of that underground area is a small path that leads to a secret passage. Strike the wall, and proceed along the path until you quickly see a carriage and some debris blocking an archway. Roll through those, and you’ll find a chest containing Smithing-Stone Miner’s Bell Bearing [2] that can be turned into the Twin Maiden Husks to add Smithing Stones 3 and 4 to their inventory.

If you’re looking for these Smithing Stones before you reach that area…well, it’s going to be tough. Sellia Crystal Tunnel and Raya Lucaria Crystal Tunnel usually offer a healthy amount of each type of stone if you’re desperate, and there’s usually a good amount of them around Ainsel River.

Elden Ring: Where to Find and Farm Smithing Stone (5), Smithing Stone (6), and Smithing-Stone Miner’s Bell Bearing [3]

You can find the Smithing Miner’s Bell Bearing [3] (which unlocks the ability to buy Smithing Stones 5 and 6 from Roundtable Hold) at the Zamor Ruins location found towards the top of Elden Ring’s map:

Zamor Ruins Elden Ring location

Head to the ruins and look for a stairwell leading down. At the bottom of those stairs, you’ll find a chest containing the incredibly valuable Smithing-Stone Miner’s Bell Bearing [3] item.

If you’re looking for these Smithing Stone before then, there are a few decent places to find Smithing Stone 5s outside of select world drops.

First, you may want to head to the Wyndham Catacombs and Wyndham Ruins. They’re located north of Liurnia of the Lakes. This marker should show you roughly where to look for them:

Wyndham Catacombs and Wyndham Ruins location Elden Ring

The enemies in those areas tend to drop a healthy supply of Smithing Stone 5s, though there’s no guarantee that you’ll be able to fill your pockets with them. Still, this is a pretty good spot for fairly reliable farming.

An even better option may be to head to Lyndell Royal Capital and farm the soldiers that patrol that area. They tend to drop a decent amount of Smithing Stone 5s.

Smithing Stone 6s are a bit tougher to find in the wild.  Again, Lyndell Royal Capital seems to be your best bet for world drops, but that’s really the only halfway decent farming spot that players have found so far.

I’ve heard some players have also had good luck finding these stones in the crystal dungeons mentioned above, but I’ve found that those spots are a little more reliable for lesser stones. You can also find more specific locations for these stones here and here.

Elden Ring: Where to Find and Farm Smithing Stone (7), Smithing Stone (8), and Smithing Miner’s Bell Bearing [4]

To find Smithing Miner’s Bell Bearing [4] (the item needed to purchase Smithing Stones 7 and 8 from Roundtable Hold), you’ll need to make your way to Crumbling Farum Azula (a very late game area) and deal with the dreaded Godskin Duo boss fight. If you manage to survive that encounter, this incredible item is all yours.

If you’re looking for these stones before then, you can head to Sellia Crystal Tunnel and defeat the Fallingstar Beast. He should drop a few Smithing Stone 7s, and you may get lucky and earn a few from that area on your way to the boss.

Smithing Stone 8s are sadly much more difficult to find. One of the best ways to locate a few of them is to find the left and right pieces of the Haligtree Secret Medallion (these guides should help you locate those) which will eventually lead you to an area called Consecrated Ground where you should find a few Smithing Stone 8’s laying about and a few more from random enemy drops (if you’re lucky).

However, I tend to recommend just going for the Bell Bearing by that point in the game. It’s really your best option, especially if you’re looking for Smithing Stone 8s.

Elden Ring: Where to Find Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone

It seems that players are still finding more information about the best non-Somber Smithing Stones in the game, but it does sound like the Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone is the absolute best item in that particular category.

Unfortunately, they’re about as rare as you’d expect. This wiki says that you can find one on a corpse near the Church of Repose, one on a corpse near the statue in Miquella’s Haligtree, and one on a corpse near the Beastman of Farum Azula in Crumbling Farum Azula. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to confirm those locations as of yet.

Twitter user Aqueel also recently reached out to let us know that you can find an Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone by defeating the white dragon that shoots red lightning in Crumbling Farum Azula. That’s the dragon found near the area’s first Sites of Grace (he’ll crash the party while you’re walking across a large balcony). He’s not an easy enemy (as you probably guessed), but he does seem to drop one of the most valuable prizes in the game.

When it comes to these stones, though, I’m still looking for as much information as possible. If you know anything that could help other players, please feel free to reach out or leave a comment.

Elden Ring: Where to Find and Farm Somber Smithing Stone (1) and Somber Smithing Stone (2)

It’s fortunately pretty easy to buy Somber Smithing Stone 1 and 2 whenever you want.

You just need to find Smithing Master Iji at Lirunia of the Lakes. Most players run into him organically as they proceed through the game, but here’s where you’ll find him:

Smithing Master Iji location Elden Ring

This merchant has an unlimited supply of Smithing Stones 1 and 2, so you’ll definitely be visiting him a few times throughout the course of the game.

You can find a few Somber Smithing Stones earlier in the game, but it’d honestly recommend just finding this merchant. He’s absolutely your best source for these Somber Smithing Stones, and you’ll typically find him around the time that you’ll actually really start to need these stones to upgrade your growing arsenal of special weapons.

Elden Ring: Where to Find and Farm Somber Smithing Stone (3), Somber Smithing Stone (4), and Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearing [2]

To find the Bell Bearing that will allow you to buy unlimited Somber Smithing Stones 3 and 4, head to the Atlus Tunnel area found here:

Atlus Tunnel Elden Ring map

There, you’ll eventually face off against two tough Crystalin bosses. Magic users and blunt weapon wielders should be able to eventually deal with them, but everyone else will almost certainly struggle to take them down. Definitely come into this area ready to die.

Once defeated, these bosses drop the Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearing [2] you’ll need to buy Somber Smithing Stones 3 and 4 from Roundtable Hold. For what it’s worth, Smithing Master Iji will also sell you a few of each.

Elden Ring: Where to Find and Farm Somber Smithing Stone (5), Somber Smithing Stone (6), and Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearing [3]

You can find Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearing [3] on a corpse located just outside of the First Church of Marika. You’ll find the church here:

First Church of Marika Elden Ring location

That will allow you to purchase all the Somber Smithing Stones 5 and 6 that your heart desires, but because you probably won’t encounter this area until a little later in your Elden Ring adventure, you might want to pick up a few spare stones before you acquire this item.

So far as that goes, you can find some Somber Smithing Stone 5s in Atlus Tunnel as well on some of the enemies that inhabit Nokron, Eternal City. It’s honestly probably better to just go for the Bell Bearing given how valuable it is, but just know that those options are available to you if you need them.

It’s a little harder to find Somber Smithing Stone 6. You can get some from the Lesser Crucible Knight enemy in the Eternal City, and there’s one overlooking a cliff in Altus Peninsula, but I haven’t been able to find a consistent farming spot for these. Try the Eternal City, Old Atlus Tunnel, and the Crystal Mines if you’re desperate, but you’re best bet is to consult this guide for very specific locations.

Elden Ring: Where to Find and Farm Somber Smithing Stone (7), Somber Smithing Stone (8), and Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearing [4]

The good news is that there is a Bell Bearing that lets you purchase Somber Smithing Stones 7 and 8 whenever you’d like. The bad news is that you shouldn’t expect to receive it for quite some time.

You can find Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearing [4] on a body right by the Tempest Facing Balcony Site of Grace in Crumbling Farum Azula. You will reach this area as part of the main story but not until very late in the game. That’s obviously bad news for anyone looking to make absurdly powerful special weapons before then.

If you need some of these stones before then, you can find some Somber Smithing Stone 7s in the Eternal City and on mobs in Lyndell, Royal Capital. There are also a couple floating out in the wild. This guide should help you find those.

Somber Smithing Stone 8 is a little trickier to locate. This guide contains some of the only Somber Smithing Stone 8 locations that have been confirmed and marked so far. The one dropped by the Teardrop Scarab in Dragonbarrow is your best bet, so try there first if you’re looking to get one as soon as possible.

Elden Ring: Where to Find Somber Smithing Stone (9) and Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone

You’re not going to be able to buy these Smithing Stones from a vendor (at least so far as anyone can tell based on what has been discovered so far). To make matters worse, there are only a couple of confirmed locations where you can safely expect to find these stones.

You can find a Somber Smithing Stone 9 near the Divine Tower of Caelid. Slightly south of the tower is a small path running along the cliffside. Follow that path, and you’ll find a group of corpses bearing special items. One of those items is a Somber Smithing Stone 9. Here’s exactly where you can find it:

Somber Smithing Stone 9 location Elden Ring

As for the Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone…well, that’s going to be a little harder to grab.

To find this stone, you’ll need to head to the Dragon Temple Altar Site of Grace in Crumbling Farum Azula. From there, you’ll follow a path outside that will lead you by some dangerous patrolling guards, birds, and even a dragon. You can get to this area without fighting anyone, but it’s not easy. I highly recommend watching this video for more information on exactly how to do it:

Manage to make it to the item drop located just past the dragon, though, and one of the most valuable items in the game will be yours.
