Deadly Premonition 2: Release Date and Trailer

Deadly Premonition 2 looks to continue the legacy of gaming's best worst experience.

Deadly Premonition 2 was quietly confirmed during the loaded Nintendo Direct that also featured Overwatch, the Jedi Knight games, and SNES games coming to Switch Online. While it may not be quite as high-profile as some of those announcements, the fact that we’re getting a sequel to Deadly Premonition is one of the most pleasant surprises that we could have imagined.

For those who don’t know, the original Deadly Premonition was released in 2010 and followed the adventures of an FBI Agent named Francis York Morgan as he tracked down a serial killer in a small town. Let’s just say the game received a mixed reaction. Actually, Deadly Premonition apparently holds the Guinness Book of World Record for being the most polarizing survival horror game (of course that’s a thing).

The game’s detractors pointed out that Deadly Premonition was a buggy nightmare that featured unbelievably repetitious gameplay and writing which you could perhaps generously say suffered from translation problems. However, those who love the game are just as quick to praise its Twin Peaks-like premise, unique style, and utterly bizarre tone help it too easily stand out amongst an endless supply of largely similar games.

Deadly Premonition 2: A Blessing In Disguise remains a bit of a mystery at this time, but what little we know about the game suggests that it will pick up relatively where the previous game left off in terms of its pacing and wonderful weirdness. Plot-wise, though, you’ll be controlling a new FBI agent named Aaliyah Davis as she reopens an old case in Boston. Her adventures (and some of the game’s other content) will serve as a prequel and a sequel to the original story. There also seems to be a surprisingly deep skateboarding minigame included as part of the final package (which will seemingly boast a large open-world setting), so be sure to look forward to that.

Whether Deadly Premonition 2 can recapture the lightning in a bottle magic of the original game is the real question here. Love it or hate it, Deadly Premonition‘s reputation is based on its unique qualities and the fact it seemingly came out of nowhere. Will this sequel be as well-received as the original if it essentially uses roughly the same bag of tricks?
