Star Wars Adventures: Return to Vader’s Castle Tells Five Tales of Horror

Star Wars returns to the world of horror in 2019's Return to Vader’s Castle.

IDW Publishing has announced a horror-themed Star Wars comics adventure called Star Wars Adventures: Return to Vader’s Castle.

Return to Vader’s Castle will follow roughly the same format and tone established by the previous IDW series, Tales from Vader’s Castle. That series told five Star Wars stories mixed with classic horror themes that referenced a variety of classic horror works. This new series offers more of the same, but this time around, the premise is that each of the five stories will focus on a major Star Wars villain.

The first story in the series will focus on Darth Maul, the second tells a tale of Grand Moff Tarkin, the third focuses on noted assassin and Count Dookie disciple, Asajj Ventress, the fourth deals with the horrors of Jabba the Hutt, and the fifth will naturally feature Darth Vader. There aren’t many details about each individual issue’s plot available at this time, but the team involved with the project are certainly thrilled to return to this concept.

“I am over the moon to be returning to Vader’s Castle for another helping of Halloween horror from a galaxy, far, far away,” says writer Cavan Scott. “The response to our last visit to Mustafar was phenomenal, and I hope fans will join us once again, embracing the dark side in the company of Sith, warlords, and crazed Imperial scientists.”

The plan right now is for each issue to be shipped out weekly starting in October (Return to Vader’s Castle followed the same format). We expect to hear more about the plot of the individual issues as the year goes on, but there’s no word on if – and when – the team will release further details.

In any case, series like this are a good reminder that not all the best Star Wars stories happen on the big screen and that is possible for the series to escape the shadow of the original trilogy (even if it is only a side step).
