24 Season 8 episode 13 review

Aaron Birch

I'm now quite happy to think that President Taylor is...the ruler of a satanic cult, Hastings is actually Tony Almeida, and the nukes are really alien bodies that need to be picked up from Madison Square Garden by the mothership

24 slaps its loyal audience in the face with an unnecessary and insulting twist in the final few seconds of episode 13...

UK readers please note: this episode doesn't screen for another couple of weeks on Sky1. There are major spoilers ahead if you've not seen the show.

24 Season 8 - 4:00-5:00pm

There was a fair bit of action this week on 24, both with and without guns, and even uber-geek Chloe got a chance to shine in an episode that, on the whole, continues to keep the show's pulse going.

After the EMP strike on CTU last week, it's no surprise that the major crux of this episode featured the team trying to make the best of a bad situation, and after Jack's plea to his NSA buddy for help, even the usually dull offices of CTU got a bit of excitement, thanks mainly to Chloe and her rather unique way of getting people to cooperate, but also, shock horror, thanks to Dana, whose plot takes a rather dark (and plain silly) turn, indeed.

With the NSA showing up like a bunch of bullish, top secret nerds, ready to kick ass and chew bubble gum (only they were all out of gum), it's not long before geeks clash, and some rudimentary techno babble is strewn around the place, with subnets and trunk lines being mentioned as if to get some technical kudos from the masses. The NSA bods demonstrate a ‘my way or highway' solution, much to the annoyance of Chloe, who thinks she has a better way of doing things, so she decides to make her point, with a gun.

By tapping into the trunk line (one for the euphemism spotters out there) she claims to be able to get CTU up and running, and so she forcibly evicts the NSA out of the rather small server room and gets to work. Even after security break in, thanks to Hastings giving her some slack, CTU is up and running. Amazing what you can do by shoving some CAT-5 cable into a line that connects a couple of phone exchanges and networks, eh? Although, quite how this is supposed to negate the physical damage done to the local servers by the EMP is unclear, but we'll let that lie for the sake of entertainment...

Of course, the episode wasn't all computers and tech support, and we also witnessed what could possibly be the longest, and most drawn out gun fight ever, as Jack and Ortiz find the terrorists and enter a stalemate against some enemy snipers for the majority of the episode, but not before the nukes are placed on a boat and start across the river.

With comms down, Jack spies a hard phone line away from their position and quickly, in an anti-terrorist Blue Peter special, gets his team to fashion some A-Team-style shields out of their banged up SUV. Unfortunately, yet another highly trained officer who supposedly knows how to follow orders doesn't listen to Jack and promptly breaks formation to end up on the wrong end of a bullet, and Agent Owen, always destined to be a 24 red shirt, bites the dust whilst trying to save his reckless buddy.

During the course of this fire fight, and up until this moment, not even one terrorist is killed, and although Jack has, in previous series, been able to single handily take out whole gangs with a pistol, even with a fully automatic rifle here he fails to kill a single guy, until he wanders into the middle of the crossfire in an attempt to distract the bad guys as Ortiz makes a beeline for the phone.

Jack is promptly hit, and taken down, and just as a sniper is about to score a headshot, Renee shows up, after being called in by Chloe earlier, and kills Jack's would-be assassin. She then proceeds, with a measly pistol, to do what Jack, Ortiz and two other SWAT guys and automatic weapons couldn't do, and kills off the snipers. You go, girl!

Of course, Jack's not seriously injured, and his bulletproof vest stopped the deadly rounds, and thanks to their efforts, and Chloe's help, CTU are back on track, with info on the location of the nukes. Phew!

This brings us to Dana. Yep, it's no secret that her story isn't winning over fans, and up until now it's been a little bit ropey, to say the least, but the arrival of Bill Prady injected some life into it, if only a little.

As I suspected last week, Dana does, indeed, reveal, truthfully or not, that the video feed Prady was after was wiped during the EMP blast, and with that, the story was seemingly over. That is, until Hastings gets a message that Prady is waiting to see him, much to the dismay of Dana.

Now, I saw the next bit coming, and as Dana made her way to the holding room where Prady was located, I knew that his days were numbered. However, I thought this would also be a very good move, injecting some much needed drama and urgency into her story, not to mention some interesting personality and character, which Katee Sackhoff has been unable to convey due to the poor writing so far.

True enough, in a move that would make number 47 proud, she takes down Prady with some strangulation wire, and promptly shoves his lifeless body into a wall panel (very convenient). But, just as I was thinking that her story may liven up, we get one of the most ridiculous, cheap and downright clumsy plot twists ever, as she calls the leader of the terrorists, revealing she's been a mole all the time. Oh come on, guys! That's just cheating.

What's worse, the twist just wasn't needed, or even hinted at in an acceptable way. The main plot was going along well enough, with Tarin's involvement and the movement of the nukes, and Dana's story, if it was left at the murder of Prady, could have flowered.

As it stands, I'm now quite happy to think that President Taylor is, in fact, the ruler of a satanic cult ready and coiled to take control of the government, Hastings is actually Tony Almeida in good make-up and prosthetics and under deep cover, and the nukes are really alien bodies that need to be picked up from Madison Square Garden by the mothership (Will Smith is apparently on standby).

And with that, I was left more than a little irked. Up until the closing seconds, this had been a very promising, if a little stretched episode. Dana's revelation quickly shot that down, though, and it just reeks of desperation, as the writers struggle to keep viewers guessing, no matter the cost, and even if things come completely out of left field.

Still, things may straighten out, and we'll have to see where Dana's involvement leads. That is, if Jack doesn't turn out to be a robot, from the future...

@Author I'm sorry sir but I've gotta ask how you could possibly complain about this twist involving the Dana Walsh character as it absolutely justifies every last thing we've all hated about her since hour 1. The ridiculousness of her being able to pull a fake id past ctu, the reluctance to go over Prady's head and get him thrown out on his ass, really I'm not saying its the greatest twist of all time but all you did was call it "silly" and "insulting" without explaining why it was so when it explains so much about her character to this point.

I found the twist a little silly. But you know what they say: its gets worse before it gets better!! It does however, explain other things (as Brandyn1093) pointed out) about Dana. To me, Kim Bauer is a more interesting character and I dont know of thats a good things or a bad thing and I hate that because I loved Starbuck SO much!! and I wouldnt be surprised at all if Jack was a robot! What with all the stabbings, bullets and torture he has endured over the years!! :P

I think you are 1000% off on this one. The twist made this season go back to classic 24 again. This is what 24 is. MOLES/TERRORISTS/INSANE JACK ACTION. This episode had everything. And her actions make sense now. Did NINA MYERS twist make any sense at first? NO! Let it play out before you bamboozle it. It was a great move. We never thought she was a mole and that makes it all the better. We all thought she would call Cole and BAM! We sat here thinking she was trying to save her engagement and she was just saving her cover. And uhm why does something have to be hinted at to make sense?? Besides Dana gave us plenty of subtle clues if your rewatch. IE. EP 2

Thanks for the comments guys, and I can understand where you’re coming from. However, in my opinion the twist made no sense as the events preceding it were suspect in the context of the character. If Dana was a mole all along, working towards such a major goal, why would the whole incident with Kevin be such an issue to her, and get to the whole police warehouse raid in the first place? If she can kill Prady in a CTU meeting room with such nonchalance, then why not do the same with Kevin, instead of the rigmarole she went through? And, why would she let Prady get so close in the first place? Instead of inviting him to CTU, she would surely meet him somewhere more secluded and done the deed. That said, these things are always up for debate, and opinions differ. As a 24 fan, I’ve far from written off the show, I just hope Dana’s actions can be quantified.

The whole show has gotten out of control. It's awful. Action has sucked, story has sucked, even Jack has sucked. They need to put it out of its misery as soon as possible. http://www.whatsgoodblog.com/2010/03/podcast-19-24-sucks/

YES!!! YES!!!! Hahahahahaha! I can't believe it. the old CTU has a MOLE routine - that's the only cliched 24 thing that has been missing this season! WOOHOO!!!! And it's probably the dumbest yet! HEY AARON, do you feel like a whole new set of writers came in with no previous knowledge of her backstory and just started writing from there? Last season had a lot of dumb twists that made no logical sense in retrospect (Tony Almeida's twist upon twist last season being the prime example. Great to have him as a bad guy - but why 20 hours of playing along?). I officially quit 24. It is past the mid point, and it hasn't improved. The only other show i have not at least seen until the end of a season was heroes. So long and farewell Jack. Will you ojne day bite the big one, frankly my dear i don't give a DAMN IT.

Sweet Jesus!! Did you all know Sutherland was 36 when he started 24 back in 2002. I looked up mthe time lines on wiki to see hiw much time has passed between the shows (As some seasons have narrative years between them) and Jack is now over 50!!!! And the year is 2016!!! Unless Sutherland was playing younger when he started. but considering he was married with a daughter of 15/16. He must have been at least 18 when they had her (to be realistic). So that would make him still at least 33 or so when the first season came about. Which still makes him 47 in the show? (Sutherland is actually 43). Fun Facts!

In december 2006 kiefer turned 40..he started filming 24 in 2001 and it aired in Nov 2001. Which means he was 34 when he started. your wiki facts are daft and ya maths is off lol So many haters it seems , i still think 24 is far from over, and better than alot of other shows on tv. Oh and blindfold11 the only dumb thing is fact u continue to watch it if its so crap.

Drpepa, No need to be so rude. it was just fun facts. Sutherland may have been 34 when he started it - but the impact of the shows facts are still rather fgishy. Jack Bauer is still a much older guy. But hey im sorry I pulled the facts up for your amusement as clearly you've gotten angry and felt the nedd to have a little internet nerd rant. And check my above statement you dumbass - i already said I am stopping watching it. Get some exercise, get a girlfriend and stop masturbating. Bye all. I hope the show improves for you all - its too late to make it up for my standards so i'm offski!

I agree with the general comments the author is 1000% out on this superb twist Aaaron;- "If Dana was a mole all along, working towards such a major goal, why would the whole incident with Kevin be such an issue to her, and get to the whole police warehouse raid in the first place?" Simply to protect her cover!! At the time I thought her character was unbelievable as you'd call such a situation in and hope your bosses empathise - but of course you won't do this if you don't want them probing your background!! "If she can kill Prady in a CTU meeting room with such nonchalance, then why not do the same with Kevin, instead of the rigmarole she went through? " Killing Kevin was an unnecessary risk. Killing Prady had to be done - otherwise she was blown This twist, just makes this Season, even better and it's got a good chance of been the best ever

Jesus! drpep you really are a bit of a dick aren't you. You just want to rubbish anyone take on anything here. So what is it? Fat, ugly internet nerd with no love life or what? Don't go to any conventions to make friends with people from here - if people here find out who you are you're likely to get ignored as an abusive little shit. Blindfold - yeah i get what you were on about - your facts may not be 100% but I get what you mean and agree to a good extent. It did make me smirk. Shame you have left the show as it has picked up - er, slightly.
