Knives Out 2 Title Workshopped by Internet With Great Results

Rian Johnson got no writing done after people started suggesting ideas for the title of his upcoming Knives Out sequel

When Rian Johnson’s critically acclaimed whodunnit Knives Out landed in theaters late last year, it didn’t really seem like a film that needed a sequel.

Johnson had been tinkering with the concept for a long time, first coming up with the idea for Knives Out after he finished Brick back in 2005. The sublime murder-mystery tipped its hat to classic detective stories, as Daniel Craig’s Benoit Blanc solved the enigma of an aging patriarch’s sudden demise, and boasted a spectacular cast that included Chris Evans – fresh off his run as Marvel’s Captain America – Ana de Armas, Jamie Lee Curtis and Michael Shannon. But as the story wrapped itself up in a neat little bow (no spoilers) by the end credits, surely that would be the last we’d see of Blanc’s nose-for-hire?

No. Because the film has made lots of money at the global box office and scooped quite a few awards to boot. Naturally, then, here comes Knives Out 2.

Indeed, though the first film is set to remain a standalone tale, it’s now been confirmed that a sequel, and more nefarious deeds for Blanc to investigate, are afoot.

“I had such a good time making it, such a great time working with Daniel, and now just seeing that audiences are responding to it, the idea of continuing it on seems like it would just be a blast,” Johnson told Deadline before official news of a sequel arrived. “But there’s a lot that has to happen before that can happen, first and foremost being writing a script. So, we’ll see.”

Later, though, he revealed that “It’s going to be Daniel playing Benoit Blanc, the detective. Other than that, all bets are off. It’s a totally new cast.”

And with a new cast, and a new film, comes a new title; one that can live up to the promise of …well, even more knives, at least some of them, y’know, out, and hopefully, if we’re lucky, much more of Benoit Blanc’s incredible accent. So, when the official Knives Out Twitter account asked people to come up with title ideas for the sequel, fans did not disappoint.

Rian Johnson was certainly not immune to all the excitement. Hey, it’s nice to know we’re not the only ones easily distracted by A Fun Time On Twitter.
