This Star Wars: The Mandalorian article contains spoilers.

The Mandalorian finished up its second season on Disney+ this week – leaving Star Wars fans beside themselves with a mixture of glee and sadness – as Ant-Man director Peyton Reed returned to helm a storming eighth episode, and WHAT a finale it was.

Din Djarin’s relentless quest to retrieve Grogu from imprisonment aboard Moff Gideon’s light cruiser reached its climactic moments in the finale, with Din (Pedro Pascal) not only having to contend with Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito) and his powerful Darksaber, but battling an escaped Dark Trooper before he could even reach the brig where Grogu was being held.

Gideon eventually proved no match for Din, but after Din took Gideon’s Darksaber, he realised that he had become the one who must now wield it – much to the distress of Bo-Katan (Katee Sackhoff), who had been counting on being the person to claim the black-bladed weapon in an effort to take back Mandalore once and for all.

Despite rescuing Grogu as planned, Mando and the gang were left cornered on the bridge of the light cruiser, with very little hope of winning against the rest of Gideon’s advancing Dark Troopers. But they were about to get a visit from a Jedi who heard Grogu’s call earlier in the season – none other than LUKE SKYWALKER, who went full-on Rogue One Darth Vader on their Dark Trooper asses, making light work of what had up until that moment been a pretty fearsome army.

As the threat dwindled, Din realised that it was time to say goodbye to Grogu, and allow him to continue with his Jedi training. You didn’t need a tissue at this point, you needed a whole toilet roll (maybe three or four of them), as Din immediately broke the Mandalorian code and removed his helmet without hesitation to bid an emotional farewell to his adopted son.

Plenty of fans pretty much lost it after the events of season finale, with many just outright sobbing…

We were pretty sure we knew who it was going to be…

And, thanks to some handy CGI, we eventually saw the face of Mark Hamill’s Luke Skywalker, Grogu’s new Jedi master…

Of course, Luke had R2-D2 in tow…

A painful goodbye between dedicated wolf Din Djarin and cub Grogu meant tears before bedtime, though…
