Star Wars: Jedi Temple Challenge will see the venerable franchise take its first step into a larger world… of game shows!
Indeed, Disney+ is set to finally validate over four decade’s worth of Star Wars trivia with a franchise-centric game show in which young contestants will be tested, as the announcements puts it, in “abilities in the core Jedi principles of strength, knowledge, and bravery,” also facing “fun obstacles” toward the goal of achieving the rank of Jedi Knight. – In essence, it’s an Outer Rim edition of Double Dare bearing an ambitious motif that “transports viewers and contestants into the Star Wars galaxy like never before.”
Set to host this hyperspace hullabaloo is none other than Ahmed Best, a name that Star Wars fans will recognize as the Prequel Trilogy’s motion-capture/voice portrayer of Jar Jar Binks. However, don’t expect him to break out the “meesas” for old time’s sake, since Best – an actor, dancer, martial arts expert and STOMP musician – will be emceeing the series in the guise of a Jedi Knight character. (Where’s your “Jar Jar is a Sith Lord theory” now?) Additionally, Best’s Jedi character will be joined onstage by a “hilarious humanoid” droid co-host voiced by Mary Holland (Veep, Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre).
As Lucasfilm Senior Director of Online Content & Programming Mickey Capoferri lauds in a statement:
“This is definitely a kids game show like no other. The various challenges will test a Padawan’s connection to the Force in three locations — a forest planet, on board a Jedi star cruiser, and inside a Jedi Temple — immersing them and the audience in a fun, humorous, and exciting competition.”
As Dan Silver, Vice President, Originals – Unscripted Content, Disney+ adds:
“Star Wars: Jedi Temple Challenge brings together the best of Star Wars – competitive spirit, harrowing obstacles and a hero’s triumph over challenges – in a totally new format for the franchise. A game show set in the Star Wars galaxy is a perfect fit for Disney+.”
Sitting on the proverbial Jedi Council of Star Wars: Jedi Temple Challenge are executive producers in Lucasfilm, Dean Houser, along with Endeavor Content’s David Chamberlin and Mike Antinoro.
Star Wars: Jedi Temple Challenge Release Date
Star Wars: Jedi Temple Challenge is currently scheduled to launch on Disney+ in 2020 on a date to be revealed.
Expect the series to break new geeky ground in the game show genre, seemingly set to ask the crucial questions that Jeopardy is too afraid to ask, such as the difference between TIE Fighters and TIE Interceptors, Rebel pilot Jek Porkins’s call sign (it’s Red 6, btw), or why TK-421 wasn’t at his post.
