Sonic the Hedgehog is getting a new series, Sonic Prime, set to debut on Netflix in 2022! It’s very exciting news for fans of SEGA’s most popular character but buried in the press release is a detail that might make this the most way past cool Sonic series of all time. From the press release synopsis of the story,

The 24-episode animated adventure for kids, families, and long-time fans draws upon the keystones of the brand and features the “Blue Blur” of video game fame in a high-octane adventure where the fate of a strange new multiverse rests in his gloved hands. Sonic’s adventure is about more than a race to save the universe, it’s a journey of self-discovery and redemption.

“Where the fate of a strange new multiverse rests in his gloved hands.” So the Sonic of this series will be traveling to different universes! This isn’t totally new for the franchise, as the plot of the recent Sonic movie had the blue blur traveling from his world to our own (with an easter egg map of different worlds he could travel to as well.) This opens up some exciting story territory for the series, especially if it’s going to interact with Sonic’s past.

Sonic could travel to the various different universes depicted in past entries in the Sonic franchise! There’s ample material to draw from, whether it’s the comics, (the Archie Comics, Sonic the Comic from the UK, the IDW series) animated series, (the Sonic “SatAM” series, The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic Underground, the Sonic OVA, Sonic X, Sonic Boom) the many many games that don’t all share the same universe, and obscurities.

The new Sonic the Hedgehog movie introduced the idea of traveling to parallel worlds to the mass audience already so it’s not a huge stretch to imagine this new show super sonic racing with the idea. It would be a great way to pay homage to the franchise’s legacy, especially since the show will come just after Sonic’s 30th anniversary in 2021. It would be a dream for Sonic fans and, in the most ideal version, also be a way to possibly wrap up some tangling plot threads from some of those universes (though that’s probably a long shot.) Bonus points if the show animates each world in the style of that comic, game, or series. (Janky mouth animation for Sonic Adventure world, please.)

Now the multiverse in this series could just be a whole new one created for the show where Sonic travels to worlds similar to the levels (or zones) in the games. However, the fact the name of the show is Sonic Prime makes it seem like the multiverse angle has much more potential than something as simple as that.

We’ll have to wait and see what universe’s Sonic will be traveling to in Sonic Prime! Which worlds would you want to see the franchise make a return to?
