Television is a fickle beast. No one can say for sure what kind of scripted drama will work. But Big Sky, the only new drama on ABC’s schedule for fall 2020, sure does have a lot going in its favor.

Big Sky is the latest TV project from David E. Kelley, the prolific showrunner best known for shepherding series like Ally McBeal and Big Little Lies. It is based on a series of books by C.J. Box. And like Paramount Network’s unexpected hit Yellowstone, it takes place in “big sky country” – this time in Montana.

The show will follow the sudden disappearance of two sisters in Montana and the group of concerned adults who band together to find them, only to realize that they aren’t the only girls who have gone missing in the area. Recognizable TV faces like Ryan Phillippe, Katheryn Winnick, Kylie Bunbury, and John Carroll Lynch all star.

Here is everything we know about Big Sky.

Big Sky Release Date

Big Sky is set to premiere its pilot on Tuesday, Nov. 17 at 10 p.m. ET. It’s notable that the show is the only new drama to premiere on ABC this fall. This is largely due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic slowing down production across all networks. It will, however, receive a powerful lead-in with a two-hour installment of The Bachelorette

Big Sky Cast

Big Sky features a pretty impressive cast of frequent TV performers. The series stars Katheryn Winnick as Jenny Hoyt, Kylie Bunbury as Cassie Dewell, Brian Geraghty as Ronald Pergman, Dedee Pfeiffer as Denise Brisbane, Natalie Alyn Lind as Danielle Sullivan, Jade Pettyjohn as Grace Sullivan, Jesse James Keitel as Jerrie, Valerie Mahaffey as Helen Pergman with John Carroll Lynch as Rick Legarski and Ryan Phillippe as Cody Hoyt.

Big Sky Trailer

The first full trailer for Big Sky contextualizes the show’s pulpy rural drama approach. Give it a watch below.

This was the first trailer for a new scripted drama series for this season. And as Deadline notes, it performed quite well across social media. TV viewers are clearly prepared for a sense of normalcy, after a long, difficult summer.

Big Sky Story

ABC’s synopsis for Blue Sky reads:

From visionary storyteller David E. Kelley (Big Little Lies) comes Big Sky, a thriller created by Kelley who will write multiple episodes and serve as showrunner in its premiere season. Private detectives Cassie Dewell and Cody Hoyt join forces with his estranged wife and ex-cop, Jenny Hoyt, to search for two sisters who have been kidnapped by a truck driver on a remote highway in Montana. But when they discover that these are not the only girls who have disappeared in the area, they must race against the clock to stop the killer before another woman is taken.
