Wonder Woman 1984 will see Gal Gadot reprise her role as Diana Prince, aka Wonder Woman, almost 70 years following the events of the first film. Patty Jenkins is back in the director’s chair for the follow-up film. While Jenkins was vocal about her wish to hold WW1984‘s debut until it could be released worldwide in theaters, as the movie was very much shot for the big screen, the pandemic eventually forced the studios’ hand. The sequel is opening on December 16th in UK theaters, and will open on December 25th in the U.S. in both theaters and on HBO Max. Given the current state of COVID-19 in the U.S., presumably most people will be seeing the film from the comfort of their own home.

Wonder Woman 1984 is set in, well, 1984, and sees Diana facing off against DC Comics antagonists Max Lord and Cheetah. Chris Pine is back as Steve Trevor for the film, despite the character having died in the climactic act of Wonder Woman—sacrificing himself for the world, as good Movie Boyfriends do.

When we visited the Wonder Woman 1984 set two years ago, Gadot told Den of Geek and other reporters of the relationship: “I think Steve and Diana have a really special dynamic that wasn’t fully—how should I put it?—wasn’t fully explored in the previous movie because we just met and we just built a relationship. And now we have an opportunity to kind of continue from where we stopped last, and now we’re doing it after, at least my character, [having] carried the big loss of him [for] all those years. So having someone that you love so much after so many years, and be[ing] with him again is just, like, great.”
