Jason Statham interview: Expendables 2, Stallone, and more

The mighty Jason Statham arrives once more at his spiritual online home, to tell us about The Expendables 2, and working with Stallone...

I think it’s fair to say that as long as Jason Statham’s making films, I’ll never be personally short of things to write about. Having caught up with him for the release of Safe a few months ago (released on Blu-ray on September 10th, for all those that missed a unique take on bar etiquette) we were lucky enough to sit down with him for a quick chat about The Expendables 2.

If you’ve read our review for The Expendables 2, than you’ll know that I thought it was a film that managed to improve on the original film in every way and not just by putting every one of my adolescent heroes (except Kurt Russell) on screen at the same time. Funny, head shatteringly violent and extremely bombastic, The Expendables 2 takes the now established team, headed up by Stallone’s Barney Ross and throws even more one liners and cannon fodder their way making for one great piece of action cinema.

Despite sharing the screen with the likes of Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, Chuck Norris and Jean Claude Van Damme, Statham’s character, Lee Christmas, is still given ample screen time to shine, whether during the bar scene mentioned below, making marital knife puns, or beating fifty shades of red out of new bad guy Hector (played by Undisputed’s Scott Adkins). The joy of watching Statham perform alongside Stallone is the great sense of ease with which the pair connect on screen, whether ripping on each other for inadequacies, or in scenes of knockabout violence, they add a much needed sense of fun to the chaos.

The interview below is an insight into that working dynamic and how even action scenes can be subject to improvisation on set. So, with my babbling aside, let the man himself tell you all about it – Mr Jason Statham.
