Goonies Sequel Pitched by Sean Astin and Corey Feldman “Too Expensive”
The Goonies may always remain a standalone hit, and that's just fine.
There’s been casual talk of a Goonies sequel ever since the iconic kiddy adventure outing hit theaters back in 1985 and became one of the top ten films of the year at the box office, but nothing has ever come of it.
Richard Donner’s The Goonies, written by Chris Columbus and produced by Steven Spielberg, may be one of the seminal films of the 80s, but unlike some other standout hits from the era, it’s remained unrebooted, unremade and sequel-less, but not through lack of effort on the part of its stars.
Indeed, Corey Feldman and Sean Astin pitched a Goonies sequel to Donner a little while back, but it was apparently too rich for his blood.
“Sean Astin and I actually wrote a pitch, a treatment of about 10 pages that we took into [director] Richard Donner and a representative of [screenwriter] Chris Columbus and Steven [Spielberg],” Feldman told US magazine (via CinemaBlend). “We pitched it and Donner loved it, but he said it was too expensive an idea.”
It feels weirdly unlikely that a studio like Warner Bros. wouldn’t want to spend a whole wad of cash on a Goonies sequel. The idea of Josh Brolin running around the Goon Docks these days is pretty appealing, and we would personally insist that Joey Pants showed up for at least the back half of the movie.
But Astin told Collider and other sites earlier this year that he thinks “we’ve probably passed the threshold for which all of us original cast members are right for doing a sequel,” adding later that he’s only recently decided to stop persuing it, but would support the idea of a reimagining of the film by other interested parties.
“The audience is so powerful and so devoted to it that I’m absolutely convinced that it will at the very least will be rebooted, which I would be fine with. If it’s not as good as the original Goonies, then okay, who cares, at least it’s out there.”
How would you feel if a reboot of The Goonies was suddenly announced?
