Captain Marvel has now been a huge hit worldwide for Disney and Marvel, and one thing that a lot of people have enjoyed about the new MCU instalment is its unexpected Skrull storyline.

In the movie, the villainous race from the comics was replaced by a dwindling group of refugees on the run from both the powerful Kree and ex-pilot Carol Danvers, whose intrinsic humanity ultimately led her to help them escape the clutches of the Kree. Carol (Brie Larson) and the Skrulls, headed up by Ready Player One‘s big bad Ben Mendelsohn, all flew off together in the last moments of the film to find a new home, where the Skrulls hopefully wouldn’t be hunted anymore.

That all went a little differently before editor Debbie Berman, who has previously worked on Spider-Man: Homecoming and Black Panther, pointed out that the first planned ending for the film didn’t quite sit right with her. Carol was originally supposed to just ditch everyone and fly off to see what she was ultimately capable of after finding out that she was playing with Space-Stone-fuelled superpowers.

“I did actually suggest some tweaks to the ending of this film,” Berman told ET. “It used to end with Carol flying off into space alone, and I found that a bit jarring. Like, where exactly was she going? And what was she doing? It felt like we needed a stronger visual to assert a more specific justification for her leaving and disappearing for so many years. So we added Talos and his family in their spaceship waiting for her, and they all fly off together. It gave her more of a sense of purpose and made it easier to believe that she left her newfound life on Earth because she was with a friend we knew she cared about, and for a more specific mission. It gave more resonance and closure to her final moment in the film.”

It seems like they made a good choice, there. You can imagine that the original ending made sense when thinking about the bigger picture – Captain Marvel would arrive in April’s Avengers: Endgame with a much larger question mark hanging over where she had been since the 90s and how powerful she had become in the meantime. As it stands, we know that she went off on a less self-involved mission that added an extra element of humanity to her character.
