In the slew of release date changes, comes a release date announcement… for 2022. Disney/Marvel has announced that Captain Marvel 2 will hit theaters on July 8th, 2022. Sure, sounds like a nice date. It also honestly feels like it’s about three centuries from now, but it’s nice to get a release date announcement that feels safely outside of the possible pandemic window. (Please let 2022 be outside the pandemic window…)

For those keeping track at home, Captain Marvel 2 will take the slot of a previously untitled Marvel movie that was slated to open on July 29, 2022. Was this movie always Captain Marvel 2 or was it perhaps a different film whose release plan has changed amidst the production setbacks during the current COVID-19 pandemic? Who’s to say?

What we do know is the July release date is a huge vote of confidence for the movie on Disney/Marvel’s part. July is one of the biggest box office months for cinemas. Any why not? The first Captain Marvel flick, which was released in March, made over $1 billion for Disney/Marvel. Why shouldn’t the much-anticipated sequel get one of the best release dates of the year?

What else do we know about Captain Marvel 2? Well, we know who’s writing it. Disney/Marvel has tapped Megan McDonnell, who is currently working on the WandaVision writing staff, to write the screenplay. Captain Marvel directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck are not expected to return for the sequel, but no director has officially been announced.

While Captain Marvel was set in the 1990s, the last time we actually saw Carol Danvers was in Avengers: Endgame, which is set more or less contemporary to us. This suggests that the Captain Marvel sequel might be a modern-day standalone featuring the superhero, though nothing has been confirmed. While it’s unclear if Samuel L. Jackson will return as Nick Fury for the sequel, good money is riding on a return of the character of Monica Rambeau.

MCU fans first met Monica as a girl in Captain Marvel when Carol returned to Earth after a six-year absence to find her best friend, Maria, and her daughter, Monica, having thought her dead in an experimental lightspeed engine accident. If Captain Marvel 2 is set in the present-day, Monica will be in her 30s.

Perhaps not at all coincidentally, WandaVision is set to introduce Teyonah Parris as an adult version of Monica Rambeau. Monica is a key character in the Captain Marvel saga, once adopting the moniker herself in the comics before moving on to other superheroic identities.
