Super Mario Odyssey Free Update Includes Multiplayer Mode

We don't need an excuse to play more Odyssey, but we'll take one.

In case you’ve somehow managed to work your way through Super Mario Odyssey‘s considerable content offerings and are looking for more to do in the game, you’ll be thrilled to hear that Nintendo has just announced the first post-release content update for Odyssey.

The highlight of this content release is undoubtedly the reveal of Ballon World. This asynchronous online multiplayer mode will be available to all players who have finished the main story. If you meet that qualification, you’ll find Luigi scattered across the game’s various worlds. Upon meeting him, he will challenge the player to complete one of what appears to be several balloon-based objectives.

The variation of the mode showcased during the Direct announcement gives players 30 seconds to hide a ballon anywhere on the map. The idea is that you’ll use your mastery of the game’s maps to find the most obscure and difficult to reach spots in the time that you are given. You will also be able to accept challenges set forth by other players.

It has not been confirmed which other challenges will be included as part of this mode, but the wording of the reveal suggested that this concept will be expanded upon in the future.

Along with the ballon challenges, this update will include a few new costumes and some fancy new photo filters. The update is expected to be released sometime in February and will be free for all Super Mario Odyssey owners.

Nintendo has previously noted that they weren’t sure whether or not they would release any DLC for Super Mario Odyssey. Reggie Fils-Aime suggested that the company doesn’t demand that every game feature DLC, and that Nintendo prefers to use it as a way for creative directors to express themselves. Given that this is a free update, it seems this might be a case of the Odyssey team simply wanting to add something to the game after the fact.
