PS4 Pro games: stunning titles that make the most of 4K HDR

Behold, our collection of the most gorgeous 4K HDR games you can play on PS4 Pro...

The best games to play on a PS4 Pro are the ones that pushing the graphical limits and showcase exactly what your 4K HDR TV was made for. In this article, we’ve rounded up ten excellent games that do exactly that.

Of course, you can play any PS4 game on a normal PS4 or on a PS4 Pro. But if you’ve forked out on an expensive PS4 Pro, you’ll want to be making the most of its extra processing power and output capabilities.

We’ve still weighted storyline and gameplay as important factors, in this article, but it’s mostly all about excellent visuals. Read on to discover our top game tips for PS4 Pro owners…

1. GT Sport

GT Sport took years to arrive, but on PS4 Pro it’s absolutely incredible. Running at 1080p using the extra power of the PS4 Pro and downsampling of its high-resolution textures, it looks beautiful. There’s just no other racer out there at the moment that can rival its visual fidelity. Running at 4K with HDR-enabled, however, it looks just so photorealistic in places it’s hard not to think you’re simply watching a real race. This is a return to form for the series, and your PS4 Pro will make the most of it.

2. God Of War

Not only is God Of War a wonderful reinvention of the long-running PlayStation franchise for a modern age, but it’s also one of the most beautiful games you can play on your PS4 Pro. The various worlds of Norse folklore look absolutely stunning in 4K, and with HDR enabled, God Of War has never looked as lush. It may not be as senselessly brutal as past entries have been – which is no bad thing – but the violence on show here is striking nonetheless. This is a definite must play if you’ve got a PS4 Pro.

3. Red Dead Redemption 2

Rockstar Games’ wild west epic is not only, arguably, the biggest game of this console generation, but it’s one of the best-looking games you’ll play on your PS4 Pro. It may not be quite as glossy in some places as the likes of GT Sport or God Of War, but what it achieves with a vast open-world game is simply stunning. The lighting effects, the character models, the fidelity at which it all runs. Sublime, and a perfect way to make the most of your PS4 Pro and a 4K TV. You won’t be disappointed.

4. WipEout Omega Collection

If simulation racing isn’t your thing, and you’d rather gawp at futuristic crafts in neon-soaked cityscapes, WipEout Omega Collection is the game for you. As a series, WipEout has always been the standard bearer for visual quality on PlayStation. It’s been a while since we last saw a new WipEout game, but the PS4 remastering of the PS3 and PS Vita entries are most welcome and, thanks to superb optimisation efforts, run at a flawless 4K 60fps. As you can well imagine, this means WipEout Omega Collection looks absolutely stunning in motion on PS4 Pro and is an absolute must-own.

5. Horizon Zero Dawn

Pushed as the go-to game for PS4 Pro during its launch, Horizon Zero Dawn does show off the potential of Sony’s platform. Utilising the graphical wizardry that comes out of Killzone developer Guerrilla Games, Horizon Zero Dawn is one of the best examples of HDR and Sony’s impressive checkerboarding upscaling in action. It’s just fantastic to look at, and the vast open world of the game packs in lots of action, adventure and mystery as well.

6. Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice

Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice is one of the most stunning indie games you’ll see for a long time. Created with a small team from inside Team Ninja, Hellblade is a journey into absolute madness as the twisted visions and worlds warp and dissolve around you as you play. It’s absolutely beautiful on a PS4, but running at 4K with HDR enabled really makes the madness stand out. You won’t be disappointed.

7. The Witcher III: Wild Hunt

Any excuse to revisit CD Projekt Red’s absolutely stellar open-world RPG is very welcome. Now that it’s been updated to support 4K resolutions and HDR, Andrzej Sapkowski’s fantasy world has never looked better – and it was already gorgeous. The verdant green fields of Velen and the Mediterranean blue skies of Toussaint jump off the screen with life. It may be a few years old now, but there are few games out there that look this good.

8. Hitman

Hitman may be a something of an underrated gem for PS4, but the complete edition of the game is absolutely fantastic when running on PS4 Pro. It was already a pretty game, but with high-resolution textures and the introduction of HDR, you’ve never seen Agent 47’s bald head look so darn good. And who wouldn’t want to see that?

9. REZ Infinite

Saying a game that first emerged 16 years ago is one of the best you’ll play on PS4 Pro may seem a bit bizarre, but in the case of REZ Infinite, it’s true. Remastered for PS4, with PlayStation VR support, REZ Infinite is absolutely excellent running on PS4 Pro. While it’s never been graphically intensive, thanks to its wireframe visuals, the addition of HDR brings everything to life. The PS4 Pro also gives a little welcome performance boost to PSVR play too, with downsampling meaning a slightly sharper image on the PSVR’s screen too. Synesthesia has never looked so bright and crisp.

10. Final Fantasy XV

Final Fantasy XV may have been a controversial Final Fantasy entry due to its real-time battle system, use of only four protagonists and only a single playable character, but it’s truly one of the best Final Fantasy games in years. That also goes for just how gorgeous it looks in motion. On PS4 Pro, with HDR enabled, it looks seriously stunning and, despite a handful of issues around framerate optimisation, it really does show you how good a game can look running at 4K with HDR turned on. Oof.
