Mortal Kombat X: NetherRealm Showed Off the Game in Stream
NetherRealm Studios just finished showing off their big cash cow this afternoon. Watch it here!
It’s been about a month or so since the last Mortal Kombat X announcement, where we found out that Quan Chi would be entering the fray. The developers just wrapped up a 50 minute exhibition of the new game, showing off the gameplay mechanics. Unfortunately, there was no announcement of new characters (which was a shame, considering the rumors that Kenshi was going to get revealed), but they did say that such announcements will likely pop up in future streams.
You can re-watch the stream right here:

Currently, the known returning characters are Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Raiden, Kano, Goro (pre-order bonus), and Quan Chi. The new cast includes D’Vorah (bug lady), Ferra/Torr (Master Blaster knockoff), Cassie Cage (daughter of Johnny and Sonya), and Kotal Kahn (Aztec-looking replacement for Shao Kahn as ruler of Outworld). They used a build from an earlier convention and there’s yet to be any actual footage of Goro.
The hosts went through the various available characters, showing off some of their different modes before having actual matches. We also got to see a handful of Fatalities. Some of which, like Quan Chi’s, we’ve only seen snippets of in trailers.
Kotal Kahn got the most spotlight in the stream, showing off his three different modes. Under “Blood God,” he’s able to summon totems that buff him in terms of offense or defense. He can only do one at a time, but if he’s going with offense, he can stack it with another ability where he cuts himself open (losing health) and becomes stronger. Coincidentally, if you try that move when you have only a little bit of health left, it will make you lose immediately. One of the buffs is a gamble in that if done right, all the damage you do to your opponent will eventually be traded to you, but only if you don’t take a hit during the process.
Kotal Kahn’s other forms include “War God,” where he has a giant sword for extra range (and as a massive projectile) and “Sun God,” where he plays as a grappler who can absorb health and meter.
Quan Chi’s “Sorcerer” mode gives him some interesting abilities that involve summoning a ring on the ground. You can summon a ring to make it that all your specials do more damage if you’re standing inside that field. Or perhaps a ring where if your opponent is standing inside it, you do massive block damage. Then there’s a ring where standing inside gives you armor against their attacks.
They also showed off the marketplace background to explain the different ways you can use the environment to your advantage, much like in Injustice: Gods Among Us. Not only can you throw barrels, but you can jump off a sleeping tiger, get it to attack your foes, throw a pig’s head, and even use an old woman as a weapon. Yes, there’s an old lady — referred to as “Blanche” by the devs — who you can grab and throw as a projectile.
Mortal Kombat X is slated for release on April 15, 2015. It’ll be available for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and the PC.
